Sunday 8-26-12 Pastor Michael sermon= Just Do It! Overcoming the Enemy Within James 1:19-26
Just do it- no matter how hard it is! Put away excuses and just do it.
James is writing to the church that’s been scattered abroad because of their persecution. Jesus had told them to go into all the world and proclaim the gospel. They decided to stay in Jerusalem instead. God allowed the Romans to chase them out so they would be scattered and spread the Word.
With us, God allows stuff - trouble to happen to us so we can grow, learn things and trust God. Look at Job. He lost everything in one day. He stayed and still blessed God. We must determine in our lives to not allow our bad circumstances to bring us down. But praise God anyhow! The God we serve is GREATER than any circumstance we face. God is still there. We are still living, still breathing, so we know that God is still there!
********* To Do It ************
1) Receive the Uncompromised Word vs. 19, vs. 21
We have got to make up in our minds that we will follow the Word of God. It must be of the utmost importance. We are to make sure that our hearing is not impaired. There are some things in our lives that will hinder us from hearing the Word of God. The political parties cannot help us and the economy cannot help us. We can only get help form God! Be in a position to hear. Be slow to speak-shut up and listen to what God wants to say to us. We need to hear the word of God !
2) We need to get the filthiness out of our lives. vs. 21
We need to do things God’s way, not our way. Stop doing our own thing. Some of us are not growing like we should because we have “selective hearing”. We only hear what we want to hear. We need to take the wax out of our ears and hear ALL that God says. God is always talking. We just need to listen!! We need to look at what is stopping us from hearing God accurately. When we hear “properly”, we will live “properly”!
Be slow to speak and swift to hear. We have two ears and one mouth. This means we are to listen more and speak less! Be slow to speak, swift to heart and slow to wrath (anger). What we hear will affect our behavior. If we are going to overcome our enemy internally, we need to slow down to accomplish what God wants in our lives. God is using our persecution to accomplish His will in our lives. He is just waiting for us to Just Do it! Don’t be just hearers of the Word but be doers of the Word!
