Loving the Unlovable
By Rick L King
Aug 23, 2012

Do you ever have a person in your life that you just can’t seem to love? Did you ever consider that you really can’t love them? Hold on to your hat as I attempt to put this in perspective according to God’s Word.

First of all who is love? The Bible says that God is love. God loves everyone. Scripture tells us that while we were yet in sin that Jesus died for us. He also tells us that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have eternal life. God so loved while we were in sin that He even sacrificed the loss of His Son for us. That is love. So we know that real love comes from God.

We are told that they which are in the flesh cannot please God. What is the fruit of the flesh?

Galatians 5:
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

According to the scripture love is NOT the fruit of the flesh. The only place that the fruit of love exists is by the Spirit.

Galatians 5:
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Remember I said earlier that God is love? All love comes from God not us. It does not come from our flesh but comes through His Spirit. Since we know that we cannot please God in the flesh and there is no love in the flesh, then the only way that we can have love is by the spirit.

Instead then of us trying to love a person we need to change our focus. If we would focus on drawing near to Him and allowing the Holy Spirit to inhabit and flow in and through us, then the fruit of love would come through us. When God’s love flows in us we become willing to lay down our lives for another person. We can’t really do that by our flesh as first of all our flesh is very self-pleasing. It wants for itself. Self is always more important to itself than it is to others. In the Spirit it is only about the other person.

The real key to loving the unlovable is to stop trying to love them by your own ability and flesh. You will be disappointed and get frustrated (which is fleshly fruit). If instead you would draw near to God and allow Him to fill you with His Spirit, you will find that love is coming through you for many unlovable (in the natural) people. It will be Him loving through you. We are just the vessel. It is not about us but only about Him and what He wants or desires.

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

If we are crucified (dead) and it is Christ living in us, then who is the one that does the loving?
