Nicodemus went to Christ at night. He went at night because he wanted it to remain secret. But John saw him.
He then had a 'personal' conversation with Jesus. But John eave-dropped (listened). Nicodemus' subject matter: 'Tell me about signs':
"Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs you are doing if God were not with him.”
But Jesus changed the topic: "You must be born again!" Kind of, 'forget about signs, being born again is the most important subject you need to know about.'
Because John saw him, it never remained secret, he let everyone know about Nicodemus secret night visit.
Did you see someone 'sneaking' to Jesus? Tell us about it. An encounter with Christ is never meant to remain secret (see also Lk. 8:43-47).
Because John listened to the private conversation, he publicised it. Aren't we glad he did? John 3:16 is part of that 'private' conversation.
Did you hear a private conversation between Jesus and somebody? Tell us about it.
When Jesus talks to an individual, He can as well be talking to the whole world.
Just in case you missed it, John 3:16 was supposed to be a private conversation from a secret night meeting.
Thank God for people who eavesdrop when Jesus is speaking to someone.
