For a long time, I have watched and learned from a show called ďIntervention.Ē For those of you that have never seen the show, they document cases of extreme addiction, and conclude the show with the addicts facing an Intervention.
Some of the shows, are downright heartbreaking. The depravity in which we can inflict upon ourselves is mind boggling. The causes of most addictions are the most gut wrenching things of all. The majority of addicts end up hooked to their vice of choice due to things that happened to them through the sheer ugliness of their fellow man.
There are some that become addictís by legitimate means. By that I am stating that they become addicted to legal prescription medicines. Through no real fault of their own, or on the part of their providers. I have known good outstanding people where this has happened, and it ruined their careers, families, and lives.
A couple went to prison because they became so enamored with the drug that they started breaking into drugstores, robbing drug dealers, and in one instance became a pigeon for a drug smuggling ring; these people were cops. If it can happen to them, it can happen to anyone.
I had my own episode with pain medication after knee surgery this past June. I came short of addiction, but did suffer from great sickness due to side effects and other symptoms associated with withdrawal issues.
My situation was lucky, I realized the symptoms before I became an addict. The new medication I am taking still makes me feel a little uneasy, and I am going to speak with my doctor to revert back to the lowest form of pain medicine on the market. I am not willing to go through the situation I was in just a month ago.
However, there are many people that canít or donít know the signs of things starting to get out of control and they can end up addicts. You may be sitting there saying that could never happen to me. Iíll tell you now, that I said the exact same thing and I was 85% there. Believe me it creeps up on you, at first it relieves the pain and discomfort and then you get used to the good pain free feeling. Then you donít want want to feel the way you used to.
You can read this and choose to believe that you are something special; that it will never happen to you. You can think that if you want, but when you feel that you are immune then one day you may very well find out that you are not.
I am not trying to dissuade you from using pain medication. Quite the contrary, I am saying to take your medicine but be aware of your body and reaction to your medicine. Donít fall victim to an easy going response of it make me feel better so itís ok if I maybe get a little high.
Thatís just how easy it is to fall into the trap. One day youíre fine, and the next youíre in trouble. Please speak with your doctor if you are experiencing any feeling other than regular pain relief, To ignore the signs will do nothing but bring you pain and misery.
If it can begin to happen to me, it can happen to you. Iím a retired cop, and I saw some friends go to prison because they got used to the pain medicine they needed after work related injuries. We have seen the devastation that drugs can cause, both illegal and legal. Heed my advice, reach out to your provider, friend, pastor, family member, spouse, or anyone that will listen.
I am not comparing my situation in any way shape or form to those that are truly fighting addiction to anything. This is being directed towards people just like me, those that are on the verge of tipping the scale. Those that can stop addiction from happening.
Donít be embarrassed like I was at my flirt with addiction, because those that love and care about you will not make you feel uncomfortable by coming to them; they will only love you the more for it.
There are many resources on the internet to provide you with information to help you decide if you need help. Watch ďInterventionĒ on A&E, and see those stories of lost lives. Your family, friends, and most of all your body will thank you. God is always available for direction and guidance, and heís always in the office.
This is dedicated to all those of you that are struggling with addiction, or have beaten addiction. Donít lose hope, there are people that love and care about you. Remember God loves you no matter the circumstance. He does not turn you away due to lack of money or insurance, he loves you more because of it.
