Family
Memories are often made in the kitchen. This has been true in my life.
One of my fondest memories is baking Christmas cookies with my 6-year-old granddaughter.
The episode resulted not only in yummilicious (granddaughter's new word) cookies, but also patience. Her patience with me as I tried to teach her the right way, and my patience with her as she declared her way was better.
We set our ingredients on the floor as it was much easier for her to mix them together. Mixing included many finger insertions to ensure the taste quality was just right.
I quickly greased the pans as she rolled the dough into balls, big and small.
Together we flattened each ball, many decorated with her very own fingerprints.
These weren't just any Christmas cookies. This was her debut in cookie making, adding to the joyful season of holiday preparations.
I placed the pans into the oven while she licked the bowls clean with the help, again, of her magic fingers.
She quickly lost interest in the cookies as they baked. A girl can't be idle but must move on to other endeavors.
There are more fun things to playing house than simply cooking!
The finishing product was up to me, involving removing said cookies from the oven and putting more in. And once that was completed, cleaning up.
Before my grandmothering days, I remember well when my son and daughter loved being in the kitchen. So much so that they would argue about which one was going to prepare dinner that evening.
Much to my delight I let them proceed with their argument and greatly enjoyed the end result with no complaints!
I took every advantage of that situation. They both did quite well, honing their cooking skills in preparation for their soon-coming day of leaving the nest.
Now that I did regret!
To this day all my children are great cooks who love to be in the kitchen.
I am quite sure that they each are accumulating many kitchen memories with their own children and yes, their grandchildren.
Thank God for the kitchen where family gather to not only eat, but also produce many lasting memories.
