All day long I ache inside,
a dirge I sing to myself.
In this darkness, wanting bright,
I'm blind to any help.
An old friend walks this way,
a presence with no face.
And so for now he's here to stay,
the grayest side of Grace.
Sorrow, you're my friend tonight;
come give me your company.
When all is wrong your presence is right;
come sit down beside me.
Misery, I know you well;
I call you by your first name.
You were there when my heart fell,
and you are not to blame.
I am comforted by my old friend
for the time that he's here.
Even this wrong will soon end;
again I'll have my cheer.
On this unjust the rain has fallen
its damp mood has its place.
It wipes away a pride so swollen
that I may know the good Grace.
Sorrow, you're my friend tonight;
I welcome your company.
Let's write a song to make this right;
then sing along with me.
