Isaiah 40:28-31 Hast thou not known? Hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? There is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Why would we say in waiting possesses our souls? Isaiah was a Prophet that spoke concerning comforting God’s people. He encouraged them to wait on the promises of God of deliverance, salvation, and the keeping power of the Holy Ghost. Joel in Joel 2:28 and it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions prophesied of the Holy Ghost being given us. Zechariah in Zechariah said that we move not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit said the Lord of hosts. Jesus came by means of the Spirit into the world. He lived by the Spirit, spoke by the Spirit, was Spirit led and Spirit controlled. We are baptized with the Holy Ghost and with fire after we have been baptized with water unto repentance. Jesus told the Disciples in Luke 12:12 that the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say. The angel told Mary according to Luke in Luke 1:35 that the Holy Ghost would come upon her and the power of the Highest shall overshadow her and that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the son of God.
It took the power of the Holy Ghost to take Mary through this segment of her life. Here she was a young girl, a virgin and pregnant. She not only was that but she was also a daughter of the Will of God. She gave herself to God’s Will in spite of what anyone would say. When Gabriel came with the announcement that she had been favored to bring forth the Christ she was ecstatic but she did wonder how this would be since she had not known a man. Mary and Joseph had to escape the decree of Augustus to kill all babies born under two years. They had to encounter many things but they endured the challenges with the help of the Holy Ghost. The fire of the Holy Ghost brought them through the things they had to endure, even seeing Jesus put to death. It took some patience on their part to endure the task of bringing Jesus into the world that was already looking for him to kill him. In many things they had to wait. Can you imagine them having to wait on Jesus to be hanged and die? Can we rest in the Lord? Do we fret at the things we cannot change? The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. Had Mary gotten hasty in her spirit to do something she could have been killed.
When we are impatient and don’t wait on the Lord we usually run into things that takes us far off course with God. It means we are not submissive to His Will which means we are out of compliance. Without submission there is no obedience taking place. We have resigned to the fact that we have resigned to our own way. Now we are not willing to forebear, which means we are not ready to stop doing our own thing to entertain God’s desire for us. We become unruffled in the face of setbacks or confusion we lose our posture and serene peace. Imperturbable means we are marked by extreme calm why would we let someone take that from us? We are not passive but steady in our walk. We have a persevering or calm nature because we are rooted in the Holy Ghost, so we are not easily removed. When we are impatient we find our soul is in trouble with God. We are restless or short of temper, under irritation, delay, or opposition. We are intolerant and become anxious when the Bible says in Philippians 4:6 that we are to be anxious for nothing. In patience we possess our souls and we give the Holy Ghost the right of way.
If we are to walk with God we too must endure hardness as a good soldier. The fire of the Holy Ghost will take us through whatever it is we face as the people of God. God loves his own. David said in Psalm 37 to rest in the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not thyself because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked devices to pass. Cease from anger and forsake wrath; fret not thy self in any wise to do evil. When we are impatient it will take us out of our God character. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord. We are to glory in tribulations knowing that tribulation works patience and patience experience and experience hope. In patience possess we our souls. We learn to keep our souls in perfect peace through the reading, hearing and studying of the Word of God. For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus.
As we walk this walk of salvation we can’t get weary in well doing for we will reap if we don’t faint along the way. We can’t give up or give in to defeat. In patience possess we our souls and we are strengthened with all might according to God’s glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness. Hebrews 10:36 ye have need of patience that after ye have done the will of God ye might receive the promise. Knowing this that the trying of your faith works patience but let patience have her perfect work that we may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. Besides this we must give all diligence to our faith that we add to it virtue that our integrity be not compromised, we maintain our temperance, purity, and decency. In patience possess we our souls that our lives be moral, ethical, honest, noble, right, pure and chaste. Then we are that virtuous Christian God calls us to be and we possess our souls in patience.
We cannot vicariously substitute our souls for anything. We can’t delegate our souls out or be sympathetic to sin and compromise it for a season. There is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: but they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint
Many times man try our patience but we must look unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith and the Holy Ghost will keep us in peace as He did with Moses when he worked to deliver the people of Israel from Egypt. When Job was going through with his family and friends he maintained his integrity and faith in God. David on the battlefield endured as a good soldier, Paul held on to his salvation no matter what he went through. But most of all Jesus went all the way to the Cross and died a mortal death that we have remission of sin and the promise of salvation. Now it’s up to us to contend for the fire of the Holy Ghost to help keep us in the proper stature that we may receive righteousness from God who will render to every man according to his deeds. To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honor and immortality will have eternal life. But to those that are contentious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness shall have indignation and wrath.
