The difference between the past and history. Andy Andrews shares this vast gulf in his book, How Do You Kill 11 Million People.
Simply stated the difference is this: "The past is what is real and true, while history is merely what someone recorded." This is one reason why people who have made a contribution to our society have their records sealed for 50 or a hundred years. This gives "history" time to cover up the truth.
To live a life of absolute truth is at least one goal of all who claim Christ as savior. To actually accomplish the goal is a miracle. Truth has no innuendo, no unstated part, no malicious intent and no mixture with a lie. Be assured the use of the above mechanisms is more prevalent than you would think in any circle you name.
When truth is varnished, disdained and rejected long enough God has/will intervene in the manner stated here, 2 Thessalonians 2:11 "And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:" Paul is speaking of rejecting Christ and embracing the Anti-Christ, yet while this is prophecy, individuals, families and nations have and are engaging in this death choice regularly.
According to Solomon Truth carries a price, Proverbs 23:23 "Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding." When truth is rejected and the lie chosen, choice will soon be between two lies.
