RIDING ON THE WINGS OF COVENANT
But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. Hebrews 12:22-24;
Covenant is a solemn agreement that binds two parties together. In every covenant relationship, the parties enjoy certain privileges and are equally bound under certain obligations which they must strictly discharge in order to sustain their oath. One major effect of covenant is that it removes walls of partitions between two covenanting parties. Part of the reasons men cut covenants with one another is to have access to protection, safety, support, help or assistance they could get from their covenant partners. In fact one key attraction in covenant is that the weaker party can exchange his weaknesses for the strength of the stronger party since the two parties have become one by reason of the bond that exists between them.
Throughout all generations and dispensations, no one has ever had deep or enduring relationship with the Almighty God except on the platform of covenant. As a matter of fact, going through the scriptures, the men who were at one time or the other commissioned into Godís divine purpose and plans, were strictly men with whom He cut covenant. God cut covenant with men like Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, the Levites etc, and all of these men had enduring testimonies by reason of the covenant. Itís also evident that without covenant, a manís dealing with God is bound to remain superficial: the man shows no obligations to God, and God equally shows no commitment to him! Itís certain that the way God will relate with people in covenant with Him is completely different from the way He will relate with others with whom He has no covenant, and this is the reason why those who are wise will never attempt to live without seeking to enter into covenant with the Almighty God. Nothing significant can come out of the life of a man who is not in covenant with God!
Part of the reasons God usually cuts covenant with people He chooses, is to separate them from others. Following the call of Abraham, God proceeded to cut covenant with him so as to differentiate him and his descendants (Hebrews) from other nations of the world. In accordance with Godís divine instruction, Abraham and all male children of generations proceeding from him (including slaves and servants permanently bought to them), were to keep the token of circumcision as spiritual mark of distinction on them. Thereís no covenant without a token; any Hebrew man who failed to keep the token of circumcision for whatever reason, was to be utterly cut off from among the people of the Lord! By insisting that token of covenant (mark of distinction) be made upon Abrahamís descendants, God has clearly demonstrated that He has no recognition or obligation towards anyone who is outside of covenant with Him. Just as those who had no token or mark of the covenant were not regarded by God, anyone who has not been redeemed through the blood of Jesus is considered Ďuncircumcisedí, and therefore has no seal of God upon his or her life, and God is not in any way under obligations to him or her! As much as God loves the whole world, anyone who has not embraced the saving grace of Christ, is completely without cover, God cannot take responsibility for his or her life!
The highest of all covenants is the one believers have with God through the Lord Jesus Christ. The token of this covenant is the seal of the Holy Spirit in us and the mark of the atoning blood of Jesus Christ. In this everlasting covenant of which Christ is the mediator (contact point), we believers are of course the weaker party who need to ride on the wings of the covenant to access all that pertain to life, godliness and all spiritual blessings in heavenly places, which according to the scriptures, belong to us. However, just as it is impossible for a bird to fly with one wing, thereís no way we can access the covenant blessings which ordinarily belong to us, without keeping to our own part of the covenant with God. Many of Godís children are living like the Ďuncircumcisedí and have become covenant breakers because they do not show faithfulness or deep commitment in their relationship with God.
No force on earth or in heaven is as powerful as the force of the covenant believers have with God through Christ! For those who are in covenant with Him, God is ever ready to stick out His neck at all times! In Psalm 89:34, God says ĎMy covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lipsí. As long as we remain faithful to God and discharge our obligations under the covenants we have with Him, God will remain faithful to His words and promises. Are there ways you have been breaking covenant with God in any are of your life through alliance with sin, sexual immorality, infidelity in your marriage, unfaithfulness in tithing etc, heaven is presenting you another opportunity to amend your ways and seek Godís face for forgiveness. God does not treat covenant breakers with kidsí gloves, there are no rooms for covenant breakers in heaven!
