Astrology is a huge "god" of our culture today. Horoscopes appear in newspapers and on check out counters. I have even seen them in high school publications. Many people refer to their astrological signs and ask others what their sign is. The song,"Aquarius" that came out in the sixties, speaks of this practice. Some people consult the zodiac sign of the month they were born, for their daily life and future.
For far too many people, the worship of the stars and constellations has replaced the worship of the Creator of the universe. Putting more faith and trust in what their sign says has become more important than trust in the sovereignty of God.
If a person says he or she is just having fun reading the horoscope or treats following his or her sign as no big deal, they are missing the point. God wants us to have nothing to do with this practice. I hope that anyone who professes to be a Christian is not "dabbling" in astrology. There must be convictions about what we believe. Certain things in God's eyes are wrong, period, and astrology is one of them.
Here is what the Bible, God's divinely inspired Word, has to say about this.
Exodus 20:3. This is the first of the Ten Commandments, which says "you shall have no other gods before ME."
Deuteronomy 4:19. "And beware, lest you lift up your eyes to heaven and see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, and be drawn away and worship them and serve them, those which the Lord your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven."
Job 31:26-28. "If I have looked at the sun when it shone, Or the moon going in splendor, And my heart became secretly enticed, And my hand threw a kiss from my mouth, That too would have been an iniquity calling for judgment, For I would have denied God above."
For any Christians reading this, yes, these verses are all from the Old Testament. Just because we live in the age of New Testament grace, does not give justification for living in disobedience to things expressly forbidden by God in the Old Testament. God wants our total and exclusive devotion!
I like what my late dad used to say when asked what his sign was. He would tell them that he worshipped the "bright and morning star" in reference to Christ in Revelation 22:16.
If you are involved in the practice of astrology, especially as a Christian, I urge you to drop it, now, and worship the Creator as expressed in Psalm 8:1-4. "O Lord, our Lord, How majestic is Thy name in all the earth, Who has displayed Thy splendor above the heavens!...When I consider Thy heavens, the work of Thy fingers, The moon and the stars, which Thou hast ordained; what is man, that Thou dost take thought of him?
