REBEKAH
I grew up in a town called Nahor after my grandfather who was one of the early settlers there. When I was a teenager my job was to go to the well outside the city and draw water for our family's needs. One evening when I arrived at the well there was a stranger with a caravan of camels. I didn't speak to him, that would not have been proper. I just proceeded to lower my pitcher into the well. When I drew it up the stranger spoke.
"May I have a drink of water?" he asked.
"Of course," I replied. When he finished drinking I told him I would be glad to water his camels, too. He just sat there on the edge of the watching me. When I finished watering the camels he gave me a gold nose ring and two gold bracelets.
"Who's daughter are you?" he asked. "Is there room for me to stay at your father's house?"
I told him Bethuel was my father, Nahor was my grandfather and there was plenty of room at our house for both he and his camels. This stranger then praised God for leading him on his journey. I didn't understand what that was all about so I ran home to tell everybody what had happened.
When my brother, Laban, saw the nose ring and bracelets he ran out to meet this man at the well and invite him to our house. Yhen the stranger told us "I am here on an errand. I am Abraham's servant. He has been blessed of God and is very rich. My master's wife, Sarah, bore him a son when she was old. Now he has sent me here to his kindred to find a wife for the young man." He told us he had asked for a sign from God showing him the right girl. Since I had given him a drink and also watered the camels I was the right girl.
The men continued to talk but I wewnt outside to be alone and think. Did I really want to leave my family and go meet some guy I didn't know? And marry him? After all, I was a beautiful young woman and could have my pick of the guys in town. Guys I had grown up with and knew. Why should I risk all this for an unknown future? What if Abraham's son didn't like me? Could I come back home?
Well, the decision was made. I would go with this servant of Abraham. But my mother and brother kept delaying our departure. Finalloy they asked me if I wanted to go. I said "Yes. In fact I'm all packed and ready to leave right now." Somehow I knew this was the right decision.
Now there were times I thought of turning back. But when I saw Isaac I knew I had made the right choice. It was truly love at first sight - for both of us.
The end.
