The open door
at Bethany
where welcome
awaited always.
Rest at last
from being physician
to the crowd.
Where dust
from His feet
was washed away,
an honoured seat
kept ready
to comfort
His weariness.
Home of Martha and Mary
and brother Lazarus,
where Jesus
was a loved guest.
The Lord did not reprove
the service Martha gave.
Kitchen sink and stove,
pots and pans,
duster and broom
all can be implements
of sainthood.
Food prepared, served
is nourishment
for souls to pray.
Only we must not be
over anxious,
unduly pressed,
but keep a calm centre
from which hands can draw
the heart's strength.
Only let us listen first
to the words of the Lord.
