“I kept looking until thrones were set up and The Ancient of Days took His seat” (Daniel 7:9a)
Although it appears that bad news is the news of the day, there is Good News for the believer. That Good News is that there is a God in heaven who has the final word on how things end. The verse we are considering introduces us to that Good News. This verse tells us several things.
1, At the same time that all of this evil is happening on earth, God’s work is going on as well, This is clearly illustrated in Revelation 15. While the angels in chapter fourteen are about to send forth their judgments we are told “And I saw another sign in the heavens, great and marvelous”
This verse prefaces the scene in heaven surrounding the throne of God. (Read the whole chapter.)
2. The fact that there is more than one throne mentioned tells us that these thrones are reserved (not yet occupied).
We will examine this more closely in the studies to follow. Consider once again what” the book of Revelation” tells us about the future occupants. Revelation 20:4 describes the event known as “the first resurrection” It involves those who refused to follow the beast: “And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them.”
3. There was one throne that was reserved for The Ancient of Days who would judge in righteousness and in truth. Again more shall be given.
The closing message we wish to emphasize is that there is activity going on in the heavens; activities that inform us of God’s knowledge and interest in our affairs (evil as they may seem to us at the present time).
