Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples woke him, saying, “Lord, save us”! We’re going to drown!” He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.
Matthew 8:24-26
Jesus was with the disciples when... the storm came, and they had nothing to fear. They had God with them in their time of fear. They did not have to worry. When I was a little boy and was in bed, the lights were out. I was alone, and every noise scared me. I turned on the light, and my mother told me to turn off the light and go to sleep. That was easier said than done. I was petrified. I turned the lights back on. My mother said, “Turn off that light!” Uh oh, now I’m in trouble. Now, she is sending Dad to shut me up and to turn out the light. When he got to my room, he sat on my bed and asked why I wouldn’t turn off the light. I said, “I’m scared.” Dad put his arm around me and said, “As long as I am here, nothing can happen to you. You have nothing to be afraid of while I am here.” He even promised. I went to sleep with the knowledge I was protected.
There are a lot of things people are afraid of, bills, real estate, falling stocks, raising prices, our kids growing up, our kids going off to school, job insecurity, debt, sickness, and many other things. God says through David in Psalm 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God.” He says, “Don’t be afraid, I will protect you.” We can turn off the light and go to sleep. He is our protecting father.
Be secure in God; know he is always watching. He knows where we are, what we do, what we think, and what our situation is at all times. Don’t let the fears of the world overcome you. Be strong in your faith. Know that you have a loving God who is always with you. His son died for us and secured our place with him and his father. He says, “Rest. Be not afraid. Be still. Turn off the lights. Sleep. I am here with you. I am not going anywhere. I will always be here. I will always protect you.”
