Christian Living
The month of May honors the glory of motherhood. The second Sunday of May is observed as Mother’s Day in most parts of the world. In fact, the status of motherhood has become a great question mark in this age of test tube babies, surrogate mothers, gay marriage, and DINK(Double Income No Kids) family lifestyle. Lust is prefered to love. Sex is sought more for recreation than the divine plan of procreation.
Mother’s Day is a day of thought to think and thank all mothers who are still carrying out the honor of motherhood.
The glory of motherhood
It is well-said that God made mothers to represent Him on the earth. God is Love. Mothers extends the greatest love on the earth. A mother may be just a person to the eyes of the world. But to a child the mother is the whole world. It is through the mother that humanity learns to live the life of love and harmony.
Motherhood in the modern world
Today’s hyper-connected and globalized world, where fashion and images are translated across continents in the blink of an eye, thinks that being a mother is a burden and waste of time. Family life is shattered. Divorces have become the fashion of the day. Even the existing families have shrunk into nucleus size. Women do not want to bear the responsibilities and sufferings of motherhood.
God as a Mother
God is the Greatest Mother. Many Indian literatures depict God as a Mother. Manickavasakar, a Saivite saint, calls God as the most loving mother. God assures His motherhood through the Biblical words, “Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.” (Isaiah 49: 15) Although God cannot be symbolized as a man or a woman, the human nature of humans dares to find Him as the greatest source of love, by depicting God as a mother.
Christian motherhood in the modern world
Christian motherhood in the modern world is a great challenge. It needs more patience and responsibility than it was at any other time. It is through motherhood that human dignity is really respected and safeguarded. Perhaps, technology may be able to produce a baby without a real mother. But it can give only the human figure and not a valuable person of love. There can be no love and faith without motherhood.
Let this year’s Mother’s Day celebrate real motherhood
Mother’s Day has become more commercial today. It is shown in more outward practices, not touching the hearts. Mother’s Day is a reminder to honor motherhood throughout the year. It is a reminder to taste love and exchange love with others. Mother’s Day is a day to enjoy the love of God through the affection of mother.
