The principle of stewardship has almost become extinct. Our society uses the things God created without regards for His intentions of it’s use. The concept of everything belongs to God and we’re simply managers of these things is foreign to our society.
In the beginning, man had dominion over things. (Genesis 1:26-28,31). After the fall, the script flipped and things had dominion over man. The “very good” (blessings) became the “not good” (curses) because man used things without regard for God’s intentions and instructions for himself. Things become “not good” when they are used out of God’s will.
God sent His Son Jesus to restore the order He initially established; man having dominion over all things. Jesus’ death and resurrection reestablished our dominion. The dominion however is not automatic, we must choose to walk in this dominion. (Ephesians 1:19-2:6)
The foundation of the relationship God has with man is stewardship. Stewardship is the proper management of another’s property. God is the creator and owner of all things and man is simply the manager of these things. Everything that we have belongs to God and He has delegated to us authority over these things.
