Like the sun that shines down on the earth every day, the Bible reveals a God who is always shining down on humanity and our world. The Scriptures say that God is light, incandescent in the shining forth of his glory and power(1 John 1:5, Hab 3:3-4). From this light, the Word and the Spirit of God are always coming to us like the light and heat of the sun making life and the knowledge of God possible(Ps 104:30, Matt 4:4, 1 Cor 2:10-11). In this action of proceeding from God, the Word and the Spirit have distinct identities in themselves while remaining exact expressions of God's mind, wisdom and spiritual power.
On a purely human level, we can see a reflection of this in the words and breath that proceed from us. Our words can have a separate existence from us if they are recorded or written down. Our breath can also fill a volume and even give life to another person through artificial respiration. Words and breath come from within us but have distinct identities and effects when they go out from us.
The Trinity exists because the God of the Bible is a personal being who speaks and projects his life and energy into the universe through his Spirit. He delights to do this and is involved in sustaining the universe every day whether we perceive it or not(Col 1:17, Job 9:5-11). All that proceeds from God is God because the Almighty cannot devolve or become less than himself. He is the eternal I Am who is unchangeable in his nature(Mal 3:6, Heb 13:8). Since God is personal in nature, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit who proceed from the Father also share in personality. They are distinct from the Father but do not exist independently of him. Hence, Jesus could say that," I and the Father are one" and" I do nothing of my own initiative, but I speak those things as the Father taught me"(John 10:30, 8:28). Jesus spoke of the Holy Spirit in much the same way saying," But when he, the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak of his own initiative, but whatever he hears, he will speak; for he will disclose to you what is to come"(John 16:13). The God of the Bible is one God who manifests himself as three eternally existing persons. In this, the God of Christianity is totally unique and there is no other being or conception of deity who is like him.
This God who is always coming to us displayed his nature in a consummate way in the life of Jesus Christ who was called Immanuel, God with us. The Holy Spirit also participated in this great procession of God to man by indwelling the lives of believers. The world's other great monotheistic religions, Judaism and Islam, have no parallel to this coming of God to man. Ultimately, only a triune God could accomplish this by the plan of the Father, the incarnation of Jesus Christ and the coming of the Holy Spirit. Yes, the love and purposes of God are truly three-dimensional, and those who believe can experience" the breadth and length and height and depth" of the love of God which surpasses knowledge(Eph 3:18-19).
Some Final Thoughts
The Doctrine of the Trinity helps us to understand that God and all that proceeds from Him is eternally and fully God. This means, of course, that Jesus Christ is fully God in human flesh(Col 2:9). This is an amazing statement because it implies that a human being and a human brain can exercise the attributes of God. The omniscience, omnipotence and omnipresence of God is now expressed through the glorified person of Jesus Christ. Itís mind blowing to think what this implies about human potential. According to the Bible, the potential upside of the human race is very great indeed. The apostle John spoke of this when he said that," Beloved, now we are the children of God, and it has not yet appeared as yet what we shall be. We know that, when he appears, we shall be like him, because we shall see him just as he isĒ(1 John 3:2).The ultimate goal of all the world's great religions is the vision of God and personal transformation through this vision. None of the world's great religions establishes a closer link between the worshiper and God as does Christianity. God has become man in Christ and the human race has been given a new start! Christianity, with its God who is always coming to us, provides a unique and sure path to this goal.
Hey everybody, I would very much appreciate some feedback from all of you that have been reading Why the Trinity. Did it help you in any way to better understand the concept and doctrine? Sincerely, Tyrone Flanagan
