The obligation to forgive as commanded by the Lord is not just for the offender alone. It also releases the offended allowing him to concentrate on his service and unimpeded worship of God. The offender however cannot because of this, abdicate his responsibility to be decent; and resist the urge to offend. Being forgiven in line with Christ’s command does not absolve him of his duty to live an edifying life in the community of men, especially within the body of Christ universal, respecting others as he expects to be respected. Christ’s desire to forgive liberally is not to be seen as an excuse for recklessness and crass irresponsibility. His sincerity in showing remorse for his actions, deliberate and / or otherwise, and repenting of them must necessarily attract God’s automatic recompense when, how and where due. 19 “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.” Romans 12:19 (KJV). The principle of curse causeless of Proverbs 26:2 must then come into play automatically measuring out to the minutest detail what is due the offender at God’s determined time and place. So Jesus Christ as the author and finisher of our faith, being mindful of the laws operating in creation, gave these commands in order for us not to waste our time in seeking revenge and punishment for those offending us. Should they deserve to be punished even when you have forgiven them, they must reap their due recompense. If this principle is well understood the offended who has forgiven an offender is better focused to serve, shrugging off the irritation of the offense. The offender is then left in the mix of his offense, his true nature, sincerity of his purpose / apology and the laws of God as we have them in this creation. The dynamics here are of a holy nature; and totally incorruptible and perfect.
Creation is full of laws put in place to regulate and run it. Man is also to allow himself to be guided by these laws and commands. We would always offend and be offended. Our offending must not be deliberate. We must make sincere efforts therefore not to offend. When we inadvertently offend the onus is ours to sincerely seek forgiveness from the offended. The offended as we have already seen must learn to quickly forgive throwing away the burden of nursing a grudge that would in most cases slow him down and tamper with his concentration. This is what is meant by “Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:” Eph 4:26. Even “For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.” 2Cor 7:10 is stressing the need for us Christians to demonstrate at all times the grace of God ruling and directing our lives. I have cause to hate a distant relation of my mother’s for his manipulation of people and economy of truth. In 2003 when I visited the USA for the OTC (Offshore Technology Conference), I arrived on a Sunday night. The conference started the Monday following and ended Wednesday. I got his number and called him. As he was not at home, his wife then (ex wife now) gave me his cell phone number, so I called him on his cell phone. He told me he was driving but would call me back as soon as he stopped. When he called me back he opened with the story that another cousin said I was not responsible because she said she had been told long ago that I have been in the USA for a very long time. Ridiculous you would say. He has since gone to town with wild stories about me, some of which make me wonder if he is not truly mentally sick. But I know the irreversible workings of the curse causeless principle and my obligation to quickly forgive and channel my energies into more productive projects, than nursing grudges and planning vengeance. The results for me have been startling and immensely edifying. If you are able to combine these commands of Jesus Christ for speedy obligatory forgiveness, with innocence and TRUTH; and redirect your energies into edifying projects, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, results may be slow in coming but they must come, in the fullness of God’s time. Only God can determine this. And you would be the better for it.
Do not react to issues in the way of the world. The world and it’s flesh appendage can never bring good news to you. It is very difficult and cheerful results are mostly slow in coming, but they would come. When Herod belched and slurred his life away promising a half naked wench heaven and earth, he trapped himself into murdering a holy prophet of God – John The Baptist. He foolishly celebrated his birthday in a way not consistent with the word of God. Judas Iscariot in committing suicide to show his regrets for betraying Christ, merely compounded his problem with God. He sorrowed in a manner not consistent with the word of God. Peter had cause to regret betraying Christ and expressed regrets in a manner very consistent with the word of God. He was restored and was further used by Christ to do great exploits. Obeying the word of God may sometimes make you look foolish to modern and sophisticated people of the world, but there is no better substitute for this.
There are very sad and painful incidents that were done unintentionally. No matter how painful and bad, they remain unintentional, mistakes, accidents, etc. A man who had just lost his beloved son in a car accident, not knowing his only grandson by his said late son was behind his car drove over the child killing it instantly. Calamity upon calamity. But it was a terrible mistake. The old man till then had managed not to have been involved in any serious auto accident until that day. The old man could not forgive himself. But he needed to forgive himself.
Another man could not forgive his offender to the point of refusing to be at Bible study, prayer meeting, etc because he did not want to meet his offender. If you allow Satan, he will cash in on every little problem, exaggerating it beyond measure until the unforgiving offended person quietly, imperceptibly slips into backsliding.
When a pastor counseled another man to forgive his wife and settle a rift with his in - laws, the man was angry and gradually absented himself from church activities. Mark you the in - laws may even be wrong but the reaction from the young man became excessive under the steady ministration of the devil. “Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. And if he trespass against thee seven times in a day, and seven times in a day turn again to thee, saying, I repent; thou shalt forgive him.” Luke 17:3 – 4. Do not try to read meanings into such actions whether they are sincere or not. The automatic laws of God will find the offender out if he is guilty. Even if you have forgiven him, if he deserves to be punished, he would be punished. “Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.” Rom 12:20. Forgiving him frees you, unloading the burden of anger and grudges. The word of Christ would go to him at the appointed time. These words which we know to be powerful would do exactly what he deserves to him, unmasking the spirit of witchcraft and other demonic / occult influences ruling him, and to which he willingly submitted himself. “It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.” John 6:63.
There is a momentous event every spiritually discerning person is watching out for right now. Even non Christian civilizations like the Mayans foresaw it long ago. The closing of this age is at hand. No one knows the exact date. But very few are really interested. This is the time for everybody to work on himself / herself. The position and location of the individual Christian in the eternal future depends on this. Those who have offended you and are deserving of vengeance and punishment should be left to God and his laws. Work on yourselves and pray that you are found worthy for your names to be found in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Let those who have no time for spiritual things move to receive their master – the personification of Satan. “And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” And “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.” Rev 13:8.
