"But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ" Ephesians 4:15
This passage by the apostle Paul is given in the context of the perfecting of the saints, the unity of the faith and the apostle would have us to become mature and henceforth no more children who are easily imposed upon with every false doctrine that springs forth from cunning deceivers.
We should learn to speak the truth in love that we may grow up. First, this presupposes a knowledge of the truth as it is revealed in the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Once having learned the truth we must speak the truth in love. This speaks of maturity. Children while they are growing may know the truth yet they often yell, and throw tantrums when they do not get their own way. They are contentious and combative.
Sometimes children do not speak to their brothers or sisters or friends with love when contending for that which they know is right. We must have hearts with unfeigned love and this is only possible when our hearts have been purified by faith, "Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently"
Now both truth and love are good for Christ is our example being the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6) and He spoke as never a man spoke and went about doing good.
We know that love is good for God so loved the world that He (the Father) gave His Son as a ransom for many and in this manner showed His love to the sheep. John 3:16
Both truth and love are a good and fitting match which should always been seen together walking side by side. Together they will enable us, as those professing the Christian faith, to grow up into Christ in all things. This includes a deep rooted faith with the fruits thereof, love, knowledge or truth, as evidence of that faith which works by love. This new man which is the inner man, the spirit, becomes more mature as the grace of God works in the Christian mightily with Christ the head governing all things for the perfecting of love.
Christ is our head and we should grow up towards maturity, which is opposed to remaining as children. Those are mature Christians indeed who grow up into Christ and become more and more like their Master.
Many do not honor their profession when they speak the truth but do so with a vindictive tongue and a hateful spirit. How will this edify or profit anyone?
Let the truth of God and the love of God fashion our hearts and minds together in Christ. Let us all be mindful to speak the truth in love and so let our communication honor our Lord and Saviour for this is the essence of good communication that can not be faulted.
