“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God.” John 1.1 The Bible is God. It is a spiritual read. God is Spirit and it is Holy Spirit breathed.
“The word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword. It penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Hebrews 4.12 Scripture is sharp, living and active.
A fire
“Is not my word like fire”, declares the LORD. Jeremiah 23.29.
The Bible burns off unwanted worldly deadwood in us. It is like a fire.
Food and water
Paul writing in Hebrews says you “Have need of milk and not of strong meat.” Hebrews 5.12 He likens the Bible to strong meat. Indeed it is meat.
Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” John 6.35 Here Jesus is bread and water. So is the Bible.
Jesus said to the Samaritan woman at the well, “You would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” John 4.10. He spoke of himself. Jesus and the Bible are living water.
We need food and drink to exist since we have physical bodies. We also need the food and drink of the word to be nourished spiritually more or less daily.
A hammer
“ You are my hammer and weapon of war: with you I break nations in pieces: with you I destroy kingdoms.” Jeremiah 51.20
The word is powerful and can destroy Satan’s kingdoms here and there. Specific scripture verses have more effect than others, at times.
A book of strength
“Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might.” Ephesians 6.10. Bible reading keeps you strong.
A house of rare gems
“By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established, through knowledge it’s rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.” Proverbs 24. 3,4
Through Bible reading God gives unique insights, personal promises and wisdom which are rare treasures. Also he gives experiences, dreams, visions to supplement the word which amount to even more interesting jewels.
A pearl of great value
“The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls. On finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.” Matthew 13.45 This exactly sums up my experience of finding Jesus. A pearl of great value. It also refers to God, his kingdom and the Bible. In the Bible we find God’s kingdom, learn about it and live in it.
An armoury.
“The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary they have divine power to destroy strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10.4,5.
The Bible tells us what the weapons are and how to use them. Fasting and prayer. The message of the cross, wisdom and knowledge, prophecy, etc...The words in the Bible are weapons themselves, some phrases being stronger than others.
Jesus used scripture verses three times at least during his 40 day temptation in the wilderness. Each time with great effect to send Satan away. It is likely he memorised scripture. It is useful if we do to, since the more we know, the more material the Holy Spirit can draw from and bring to our mind to use in any situation.
