ĎTherefore what God has joined together, let no man separateí - Mt 19:4
In the beginning when God created man he found him alone and thought of getting a helper for him. He bought everything that He created but found nothing suitable. Then finally He took manís rib and created women for him.
On Earth, two souls destined for each other, already stamped by Godís seal, are joined together through marriage. A relationship of honor (Heb 13:4), purity, sanctity and trust. A ceremony which signifies the worldly unity of two individuals, in the presence of God, to mark the beginning of a relationship valued by Him and so to be valued by all. The Word, at many places, talks about the relationship and importance of being good husbands and wives. Husbands and wives are Godís gift to each other and so their prime responsibility is to respect their relationship and nurture it to be fruitful, the way God wants it to be.
ĎHe who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lordí (Pr 18:22). Godís favor is always to be received with respect. When two people get united in Lordís name, then apart from the valuing the joy they have received, they also need to know their duties towards each other as taught by Him.
This is what the Word says to the husbands:
a)Love your wives as your own body. The one who loves his wife loves himself as no one hates his own flesh (Eph 5:28-29).
b)Donít become bitter against your wife (Col 3:19).
c)Live with your wives understanding their weaker nature. Respect as they are the co-heirs of the grace of life and then your prayers will not be hindered (1Pt 3:7).
d)This is what the LORD commands: a husband is not to leave his wife (1Cor 7:11).
e)If a man has an unbelieving wife and is willing to stay with him, then he must not leave her (1Cor 7:12). For an unbelieving wife is sanctified by the Christian husband (1Cor 7:14).
Similarly, the Word also guides the wives:
a)Wives should submit to their husbands as to the Lord, for the husband is the head of a wife (Eph 5:22, Col 3:18).
b)Respect your husband (Eph 5:33).
c)A wife should be pure and reverent so that even if a husband disobeys the Christian message they get guided by the lives of their wives (1Pt 3:1-2).
d)This is what the LORD commands: a wife is not to leave her husband (1Cor 7:10).
e)If a women has an unbelieving husband and is willing to live with her, she must not leave her (1Cor 7:13). For an unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife (1Cor 7:14).
f)God asks wives to beautify themselves with a quiet and gentle spirit, one which is imperishable and valuable in Godís eyes (1Pt 3:4).
g)Wife should be of noble character which is a crown for her husband (Pr 12:4).
As the Lord says - ĎMay your fountain be blessedí (Pr 5:18) and so he has created marriage to be beautiful and wants it to remain so in his eyes. Respect the relationship which God has created exclusively for every individual and abide by what he says. Respect the union.
