With Easter coming up, it might be a good time to talk about the resurrection of Yeshua. This was of course the crowning achievement of His ministry. He had predicted that He would rise and He did. This provided the most dramatic proof possible that the power of God is stronger than the power of death. My question is-what then?
Yeshua was still wounded. Thomas was able to feel these wounds to verify His identity. Before being crucified, He had been beaten half to death and had probably lost a lot of blood in the process. In addition, the Romans did not know or care about bacterial infections. I think it is safe to say that the nails, spear and whips were not too sanitary. Tetanus would have been a distinct possibility.
Dogma tells us that Yeshua rose bodily to heaven. Given the limited understanding of the universe at that time, this would have been possible. If the earth is a flat disc covered by the dome of heaven, it would have been a short trip. Of course we now know that the stars are a lot farther away than the Hebrews thought they were. If Yeshua took off 2012 years ago and travelled through space at the speed of light, He still would not have left the Milky Way.
Both the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of John make no mention of the ascension of Yeshua. In Mark, there is no mention of the time between the resurrection and the ascension, merely an account of Yeshua appearing to several people. The ascension is described in Mark 16:19-"So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God."
Luk 24:51 describes it this way-"And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven."
Now if Yeshua does indeed sit on the right hand of God, it can not be in physical form. Contrary to what is shown on the ceiling of the Cistene chapel, God is not a naked old man who works out sitting on a cloud. We are told that God is a spirit and His kingdom is a spiritual kingdom. So if the spirit of Yehsua ascended to God, the rules of physics would not apply and the transfer would have been instantaneous.
So did Yeshua ascend physically or spiritualliy? And what implications does this have for the concept of the Rapture?
