Are you about your master’s business? Do you know what God’s business is? A part of growing spiritually and being weaned from the milk of immaturity onto the meat of purity is to be more than the servant who simply obeys, but a friend who cares about the Lord’s mission, that great commission to be a light shining brightly for the call of Christ to the nations. In John 15:15 Jesus says“I no longer call you servants, because a servant doesn’t know his master's business. Instead, I call you friend, for everything that I learn from my Father I’ve made known to you.” Because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, we have intimacy with the Master, our friend.
Abraham was called God’s friend because of his righteousness. In like manner, our minds are cleansed from impurities as we draw closer to the Savior by His righteous sacrifice. As we walk out our faith we are made righteous in deed as well as thought, having nothing to do with our own will, but His alone. As Christ’s friend, I answer His call because of His love for me, not because I have to. I rise above temptation because it has become irrelevant in my daily walk through allowing myself to be conformed from carnal to spiritual desires. I no longer say “God is in control” because this insults the Lord since there’s nothing in the nature of God that manipulates or is controlling.
Control is about the adversary, our enemy. Conversely, the heavens and earth cannot help but respond with delight to God’s majesty, and I want to be the same. Though I see and offer myself as Christ’s servant, He sees me as His friend. Salvation was offered as a free choice and our walks of faith are guided by the Holy Spirit, not His might. The Lord doesn’t need to control you because His presence is a sweet savor that draws you to Himself. As we all come to care more about the cause of Christ, it should bring us into a higher level of freedom, leaving bondage behind - the bondage of slaves that were saved to be called eternal heirs in Jesus as well as His friends.
