What makes us want to fight and kill? Hate and destroy? Is this normal? Does Satan have a strangle hold on humanity? Heavy duty questions almost universally unanswered, but are they unanswerable? Or are there answers that are generally ignored?
Jesus came into this kind of world, and we live in it to this good day with the very same questions. People are given the right of choice at creation. How our world looks, and how we behave individually or as a group will reflect freedom of choice. It’s always been that way and will continue to be that way as long as the earth stands because God ordained it thus.
So it inevitably comes down to a choice individually at first, and then as groups who choose to follow the dictates of our Lord. And as we choose His precepts, we come closer to how we ought to be, perhaps never quite there and always the minority, but valid nonetheless. Remember Jesus Himself asked that poignant question: “…When the Son of Man returns, will He find faith upon the earth?” Luke 18:8
And the message is plain, and the choice is ours, one by one. We know the commandments: Love God and one another. Treat others as you want to be treated. Feed the hungry, encourage the faint-hearted. Put no stock in money or tomorrow. The first is eternally worthless, and the second may never come. Live peacefully and quietly before God and man. It’s a tall order, but the sum of it will help change a sad dog-eat-dog world into God’s intention for it.
May He continue to bless us, an acknowledged pitifully small minority, as we strive to give our best back to Him. After all, one small light bulb can illumine a whole room. Let’s strive to shine in a dark world. And then, as Jesus defended the humble foot-washer
"She has done what she could." will be our benediction.
