Her eyes barely clear the windowsill as she stands on tiptoes. Curiosity has won out over caution. The porch stretches on for miles, finally ending with an infinite drop into the abyss. Just beyond the glass, a pair of blue eyes set in a translucent face peer back at her. As they come into focus, she startles and the face mimics her reaction. She envelops herself in the soft, green curtains for protection from the stranger. After a few moments of hiding, she unveils her eyes and once more peers outside.

A ferocious lion struts by, waving his tail behind him. Instantly she is enraptured in his gait, studying the way he paces behind the glass that cages him. After hours of this, the lion grows bored and makes his bed under the towering apple tree near the black top river beyond the yard.

A slight movement to her right catches the girl’s attention. As she slowly cranes her neck to investigate, an eight-legged monster the size of a dinner plate crawls out of the shadows. She flinches back, a gasp escaping her lips, before remembering the glass barrier between them. The creature drags itself across the surface, leaving a shiny trail in its wake. Slowly, a pattern is woven from the shiny string. The young girl is mesmerized, and reaches to touch the intricate design. Suddenly, a million beady eyes are boring into her own. Instinctively, she retreats into her green cocoon.
