Wisdom without self-control is a mockery of the foundation upon which wisdom ought to build from
When God appeared to him and asked him to request whatever he wanted God to give him, King Solomon asked for leadership wisdom to help him lead the people of God.
A very noble request indeed, God Himself was impressed a result of which He commended him (2 Chron. 1).
Its noteworthy that God didn't limit what He wanted Solomon to ask for. But even if God meant that he asks only for one thing, the gracious and generous God wouldn't reject another noble request.
The king could have done even better to ask for 'self-control'. By his own confession, he pursued pleasure with passion (Eccl. 2:10). With 700 wives and 300 concubines, the king went overboard with sensuality to a point of disgrace.
