I recently heard a sermon based on love that covered some details from scripture as far as what love is all about. While the sermon was quite good, I thought that a refresher on the comparison between what love and lust are might be useful for many teenage fathers like myself. After all, I hope my children come not just to know but to truly understand the difference between the two and to choose love every time.
So here is a side by side comparison with some clarification of terms in between:
Love is Patient,
Lust is impatient,
(Patient = Capable of Waiting, to Endure
Delay, Without Becoming Annoyed or
Upset)
Love is kind.
Lust is unkind.
(Kind = Compassionate, Generous,
Agreeable or Safe, Not Harsh or
Unpleasant, Caring, Showing Courtesy)
It does not envy,
It always envies.
(Envy = Desiring or Wanting What
Somebody Else Has)
It does not boast,
It always boasts,
(Boast = Excessively Proud Statement or
Refer Immodestly to Possessions or
Accomplishments)
It is not proud.
It is full of pride.
(Proud = Arrogant, Having an Exaggerated
Opinion of One’s Self)
It does not dishonor others,
It dishonors others,
(Dishonor = Cause Shame on Yourself or
People Associated With You or a Loss of
Respect or Reputation, Failure to Keep
a Promise or Agreement.)
It is not self-seeking,
It is always self-seeking,
(Self-Seeking = Selfish, Interested in
Only Doing What is Good for You)
It is not easily angered,
It is easily angered,
(Angered = Become or Make Greatly
Annoyed, Strong Feelings of Displeasure)
It keeps no record of wrongs.
It keeps a record of all wrongs.
(Record = Lasting Account Available For
Use at a Later Date, Body of
Information Gathered Over Time)
(Wrongs = Mistakes, Poor Judgments,
Improprieties, Failures, Unacceptable
Behavior)
Love does not delight in evil
Lust delights in doing evil
(Delight = Great Enjoyment and Pleasure)
(Evil = Profoundly Immoral or Wrong,
Deliberately Causing Great Harm, Pain
or Upset)
But rejoices with the truth.
And retracts from the truth
(Rejoices = Show Great Happiness or to
Celebrate)
(Truth = Things that Correspond to Fact
or Reality)
It always protects,
It always hurts,
(Protects = Keep Somebody Safe, Prevent
Harm or Damage)
Always trusts,
Always causes mistrust,
(Trusts = Confidence In and Reliance on
Good Qualities, Especially Fairness,
Expecting Others to Behave Honorably,
the Responsibility for Taking Good Care
of Somebody)
Always hopes,
Always deflates and defeats,
(Hopes = Have a Wish to Do Something,
Feeling that Something Desirable is
Likely to Happen, Source of Success)
Always perseveres.
Always gives in.
(Perseveres = Remaining Steady in an
Action or Belief Over a Long Period
Despite Problems or Difficulties)
Based on God’s Word 1-Corinthians 13:4-7 KJV
Based on the human emotion.
I would encourage you today to print this out and post it where ever you can easily access it. Any time you have a question in your mind if you are encountering a spirit of love or lust simply review the definitions and soon you will see that love always speaks for it’s self but lust always hides behind the voice of lies.
God Bless! - Rick
