In a sense even when you are reading the Bible you have your faith switched on. Then you will know when God is speaking to you and about what. You know deep within when God is speaking to you. He tends to be peaceful, still and clothed with faith.
"Beloved, do not believe every spirit; but test the spirits to see whether they are from God." 1 John 4.1
In this life we are open to lots of things. We should test the source of everything that comes our way. Not every word or piece of advice has its origin in God. Not every scripture verse coming at you is from God. For instance Jesus was sent scripture from Satan to try to entice him to do things not from God. Satan is clever that way, but Jesus saw through it, and quoted the apt scripture back at Satan, to refute it. We can distinguish the Holy Spirit from other spirits. It is for an accurate walk with God that we need to check everything to ensure we are walking with Jesus, and not in error.
"I have made you an assayer and tester among my people, that you may know and assay their ways." Jeremiah 6.27. It is for us to know right from wrong, and good from evil. It is for us to stand up for the rights of others, and ourselves. That is what Jesus did on earth. He wasn't passive or intimidated. Quite the opposite. He was forthright in his views, speech and what he did. He didn't turn a blind eye to injustice, but spoke about it head on, or did something about it. He definitely knew right from wrong and hated hypocrisy and covering up of evil.
