Jesus Christ came to pay our debt. You see man has a debt to pay that he owes to God. Man can not pay it. He has no ability to pay it because to pay it he would have to spend an eternity in hell for "the wages of sin is death."
Romans 6:23 and the death that God has in view is eternal damnation. In order to pay our debt we would spend eternity in hell paying it. Another one came to pay our debt Jesus Christ. For this purpose he came to this earth to pay the debt of his people. Who are his people but those whom he chose before the foundation of the world to believe.
I once thought that faith was a work of man. Faith is a work. We are told that faith is not a work and that we are saved by grace through faith. Ephesians 2:8. This is true. But then it says, "and that not of yourselves. It is a gift of God not of works lest any man should boast."
In other words faith is not a work of man and it is not of works that we can do. It is not our doing many good things for Christ that gets us accepted by him but rather "This is the work of God, that you believe on him whom he has sent."
John 6:29 It is the work of God. Faith is a work of God that He works in us so that we might will and to do of his good pleasure. So everything is from, through and back to God. God gets all the glory and all the credit for our salvation.
We sing that hymn To God be the glory great things He hath done, so love He the world that he gave us His son.
Now one of the reasons the church is in such a sad state today is that we have such an easy believism gospel which has lead to many false conversion. This false gospel preaches that anybody and everybody can be saved because of man's so called "free will". Salvation is seen as something totally dependent upon what we do. These free willers do not understand that mankind is at the complete mercy of a sovereign God. This sovereign God of the Bible is not sitting there begging poor sinners to accept him but rather he commands us to repent and believe the gospel. We are to believe the gospel concerning Jesus Christ and what he came to earth to do.
