How Big are Your Giants?
… “the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord's and He will give you into the hands.” 1 samuel 17:47 (NKJV)
David faced Goliath and did not see the size of the giant, He saw the size of His God. When David went to visit the camp to see his brothers and heard the threats of the Philistine, He was filled with indignation. How dare someone come against the armies of the living God! I always laugh when I read 1 Samuel 17:32, when David (a young shepherd boy) in so many words tells the Israelite army not to worry any more about Goliath as he go and fight him. Now if I had of been one of the soldiers, in the camps and a young shepherd boy came along and told me not to worry any more about my biggest threat - as he would single handedly sort the problem out - I would have been even more worried! Let a young shepherd fight this giant? Let Israel's future rest of his shoulders? Absolutely not!
But David did not look at the size of the enemy, he looked above. How many times do we see a 'giant' in front of us and we cower? So many times I've heard people say things with such a lack of faith in God. They are seeing the obstacle, not the size of the big God that we serve. Either the name of Jesus is above all names or it is not. It cannot be a 'pick-and-choose' thing. Do you believe that the name of Jesus is above any financial troubles? Do you believe that the name of Jesus is above any illness? Yes, it is above cancer, it is above heart trouble, it is even above AIDS. There is no illness under the sun that is above the name of Jesus. That does not mean that He always heals. That is a mystery of God that I do not understand. Why do some people get healed and others seem to have to live with their illnesses? That is God's understanding not mine. But I do know that nothing I face is above the name of Jesus. Depression and mental illnesses are under it. I come from a family with a history of alcoholism and depression. A member of my family is constantly in hospital dealing with these things. If only they'd let the name of Jesus into their lives – I'm sure they'd see a big difference. Since having my children, I've struggled with periods of depression. As a Christian (and a Pastor's wife), I find this hard to talk about as people are known to judge. But when I feel that dark cloud come upon me, I start reading the scriptures and quoting it to my own life. I tell my mind things that are written in scripture about me. I minister to my soul. “Praise the Lord, oh my soul”. No matter what I am feeling, the name of Jesus is above it. The name of Jesus is above alcoholism, nicotine addiction and even drug abuse.
I will always remember a testimony I heard from a lady who had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She was told by her doctor what the prognosis was and she said, “don't worry, Jesus will heal me.” You see, she didn't see the size of her giant, she saw the size of her God. She went away and filled herself with the word of God. She reminded her soul and her body how big God was. She read the promises of God to her mind. She made her body and soul praise the Lord. Over a short time, she went for a check up only to be told that a miracle had happened and her cancer had gone away. “Of course,” was her outlook. “Why not?” These things are not above the King of kings and Lord of Lords, the Maker of heaven and earth.
So I challenge you, as you walk in the ways that the Lord has set before you and giants come in your way (which they always seem to do), not to look at the size of that giants, look to the size of God.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you that you are guiding me. Thank you for the giants that you give us the opportunity to slay. How much more you have for us to do than to be fearful of things that intend to enslave us. Help me to remember that you are bigger than my obstacles. In Jesus name, Amen.
