Man's inhumanity to man gives the lie to humanism and therefore all humanistic teachings must be abandoned and supplanted with Christian orthodoxy.
Now Christian orthodoxy historically has been seen as part of the Reformed faith or Calvinism as it has been known also. Calvinism comes from the teachings of John Calvin, a Presbyterian minister and statesman who lived in the sixteenth century. Now without getting into the teachings of John Calvin at this point suffice it so say that the greatest revivals in history have taken place under Calvinistic preachers.
Going back to the founding of Harvard in 1636 just six years after the founding of Massachusetts Bay Colony, whose governor incidentally was John Winthrop, a Puritan, you had the proliferation of colleges which were trained specifically for ministers: Harvard, Princton, William and Mary, Columbia University and many others. the names were changed on some of the colleges.
Calvinism gave root to the religious fervor of the Great Awakening and men such as Whitefield, Edwards and Wesley began to preach on man's sinfulness, a tremendous departure from any type of humanistic religious teachings. You see the religion of humanity focuses on man's potential or man's goodness. Calvinism and orthodox Christianity, however, focuses on God and His glory and man's potential must be seen in terms of his faith in God and what God can do through him by the Spirit of God.
