Throughout the Old Testament the prophets cried aloud of Israel's sins and called them to turn from their wickedness. This was done before Jesus Christ came came to earth and revealed himself as the Messiah. John the Baptist was the forerunner to Jesus and preached repentance for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.
After Christ came to earth he at about age 30 began to preach openly in what would be considered streets. Crowds gathered and he both performed miracles, healings and taught the people. Ofcourse the religous rulers of that day, the Jewish scribes and Pharisees didn't like this because it diminished their authority and drew attention away from them who loved the praises of men. Such is the case today also.
Many church leaders and pastors love the praises of men and are unmindful of the scriptures which tell us that the fear of man brings a snare. Proverbs 29:25
Another reason for street preaching today can be taken from the history of the New Testament under which we are still living.
In Acts 2, when the day of Pentecost was fully come, the promise that Jesus foretold to the Apostles that they would receive power after the Holy Spirit came upon them and that they would be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth was fulfilled. (Acts 1:8)
The apostles were all gathered together and suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind and all the apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit and each began to speak with other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. In order the explain the apparent confusion amongst the many devout Jews which had gathered from every nation as a result of hearing every man speaking in his own language and to silence the mocker's accusations that these men were drunk Peter stood up and lifted up his voice and told the crowd that what was happening was not a result of being drunk with new wine but that which was spoken by Joel the prophet. Peter then preaches Jesus of Nazareth as one approved of God who did miracles and was crucified by wicked hands and later resurrected by God.
In Acts 2:38 Peter said unto them Repent, and be baptized every one of you for the remission of sins.
We see after Saul's conversion in Acts 9 after he had received his sight and was strengthend and abode certain days with the disciples that he straightway preached Christ in the synagogues at Damascus.
Today we recognize the fact that there are many Christian churches around the world. They have a name in profession but are like the DEAD church in Sardis (Rev.3) or the loveless church in Ephesus which left it's first love (Rev. 2:4)
The Apostles, in order to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ to the masses of lost Jews didn't wait for temple invitations from the Jewish leaders to spread the gospel
of Jesus Christ. Instead they traveled all around the Roman empire and so today do many street preachers today whom God is raising up to fulfill the Great Commision.
Sometimes we need to lift up our voice against sins both within and outside the local church.
Idolatry is rampant today especially in the entertainment business. For this reason an interdenominational evangelism team and some street preachers decided to address this crowd of Katy Perry fans and call them to repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
It was in November I joined another street preacher and lifted up my voice outside the Staple's Center in Los Angeles.
Click below to watch a short sample of my preaching. NOTE: Not everybody will be called to do this but certainly part of evangelism is distributing gospel tracts and confronting people one on one about their destiny after they die.
