You go to camp with a full bottle of Advil, and end up with an empty container, pleading for more, and for something stronger, because there is still one more day left!!! Mary and I have decided to start a fund for the hearing impaired for the kids that attended Kids Kamp, because after you ask them to please stop misbehaving, they look at you, nod their head, as if they understood you, and then continued doing what they were doing before you “rudely” interrupted them!!
I never realized how uneducated I was until I took a week long trip with these miniature adults, that continued to correct my answers to their questions, as if my 50 plus years of experience never existed. Oh well, what do you expect from a country that elects a president that thinks there are “57” states, omits the words:” by their Creator” when quoting the Declaration of Independence, and eats junk food behind his wife’s back? Speaking of junk food, I’ve never seen such bottomless pits when it comes to devouring junk food! Some of these boys were constantly stuffing their faces even before they went out the door for meal time, and then later, back at the cabin, they emitted some of the most disgusting bathroom odors I’ve ever smelled, and I use to have a horse farm!!
When I reflect back on this past week, I realized one particular disturbing observation from among all the kids from all the churches. I remember listening as they talked to each other about their favorite sport or sports hero, or about their favorite video game, or the songs they have recorded on their ipods or heard on the radio. They talked of movies or favorite actors or stars, and many talked of their own great achievements, but I don’t remember coming across any conversations about biblical stories or biblical heroes, other than during the Bible Studies that were in the afternoon sessions. Our own priorities in life seem to have taken over the first commandment Moses brought down from the mount: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me”!
This brought to my attention the fact that we have a very small window of opportunity to reach these kids and ground them in biblical knowledge. Some may say that this is merely an indoctrination program, and to a certain point I agree. But, do you want them indoctrinated with Scripture or worldly pleasures and distractions? We have a “dumbing down” indoctrination going on in out public schools with very little protest from families, yet we allow them to take out all biblical references from our schools and graduations. So, what actually happened during this week of chaos and sleep deprivation? Did the kids have fun? Yes. Did they get plenty of exercise? Yes. Did they make new friends? Yes. Did they hear the Word of God? Yes. And the best thing that happened was 10 decisions of salvation, and one called to be a missionary!!
What was the most disappointing thing about camp? With all that exercise, walking, sports, standing in line, and yet I never lost “one” pound !!!!!!!!!!!
