A Most Important Question Will Your Religion Save You?

How many people flatter themselves that all is well with their soul and that their religion will some how save them?

You may have been brought up in a church and attended Sunday school and heard great sermons and acquired alot of knowledge about the Bible and about the various passages of scripture pertaining to this life about alot of spiritual truth. You believe in a heaven and hell. You believe that Jesus Christ was the Son of God, in fact that he was God.

You believe that sin deserves to be punished but you yourself do not believe that you shall be the object of punishment. You may even believe that Christ died for your sins and yet still be "dead in your trespasses and sins" and still not right in the sight of this most holy God that you profess to believe in.

The woman at the well had religion also and thought she had a saving relationship with God and tried to justify herself before our Lord but the Lord probed deep into her conscience and spirit and showed her that he was in fact the Messiah and not an ordinary man for this man knew that she had had previous husbands and the man that she was living with now was not her husband. This must have startled her and caused wonder and amazement that such a man would know these things about her.

Jesus said, "he that drinketh of this water shall thirst again but he that drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst."
John 4:14

How we need that living water that comes from a fountain that never runs dry. As Titus 3:5 says, we have received the washing of regeneration. You see the word of God, the Spirit of God, washes and cleanses us but people will justify themselves and believe they are righteous because people have an inherently good opinion of themselves when compared to other people. But this self-righteousness until it is destroyed and put away from them will cause them to go deeper and deeper into themselves and further from God until they see that they are sinners who have violated and broken a most holy law given by a most holy and righteous God and that "the wages of sin is death" as Romans 6:23 says, people will never come out of themselves and flee to Christ.

It matters not what nationality they are of people will justify themselves because they were brought up in a particular religion or they think because they are a particular race that they are therefore right with God and saved and on their way to heaven whether they be Jewish, Armenian, or whether they be hispanic brought up in the Roman Catholic faith, whether they be Dutch Reformed it doesn't matter.

GOD DOESN'T SAVE BY RACE BUT BY GRACE. There are even those of the British Israelite religion who believe in the supremacy of the white anglo saxon race and so they do not see themselves as inferior but rather superior to to other races and therefore they prevent inter-racial marriage. They cannot escape the guilty of racism.

Consider the Jews that Peter preached to on the day of Pentecost. They had been taught by their rulers that this Jesus was a phony, a weak vessel, who was crucified and who taught lies and deceived the people and yet Peter said, this very same Jesus that God has raised and exalted sits at the right hand of the Father.

You see they were confronted with a decision. Was Peter telling the truth or were their rulers telling the truth? Acts 2:37 says they were pricked in their hearts when they heard these things.

These men and women said, "What must WE DO?" People want to do something to atone for their transgressions or sins. The Corinthian jailer said, "What must I do...What must I DO to be saved?" Acts 16:31 says, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you shall be saved." Peter says in verse 38 "Repent...repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."

Notice that they did not all become saved necessarily at that minute for Peter goes on "and with many other words..." the scripture says, "with many other words did he, that is, Peter, testify and exhort saying save yourself from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized on the same day there were added unto him 3,000 souls."

So we see that people may be pricked in their heart and they may acknowledge their guilt and the Holy Spirit convinces them of their sin and at this point they come to the end of themselves. Theyu want to do something and yet they CAN NOT repent and believe because they are SPIRITUALLY DEAD! A corpse can not do anything but lie there and be dead. The same with a person who is spiritually dead.

Ephesians 2:1 says, "You hath he quickened (or made alive) who were dead in trespasses and sins." That is that state of mankind by nature. We must be made alive and quickened by the Holy Spirit THEN we can repent and believe. This command must be given nevertheless not withstanding man's natural INABILITY. The word repentance comes from the Greek word metanoia which means a change of mind. There is a repentance. There's a putting off of the old man. There's a ceasing to do evil and there's a LEARNING TO DO WELL. There is a believing, a trusting in the truth as it is found in Jesus Christ who said, "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life; no man comes unto the Father but by me." John 14:6

Men must be shown their only hope is in the Lord Jesus Christ and that they must turn from their sins.
