Faith is the yeast of every prayer.
Faith is the leavening yeast of every prayer. Without faith prayer cannot do any work. Jesus Christ points out this truth directly and indirectly. His teaching as well as his healing ministry confirm this great truth. Even in his “Lord’s Prayer” he mentions about “bread” which is leavened by faith. The power of prayer can work only through the leavening effect of faith.
Faith is the leavening yeast of prayer bread
Bread cannot be made without yeast. If you do not add yeast it will not rise. A prayer without faith is equal to nothing. God expects faith to be added to every prayer. If you do not have faith in God’s love, your prayer will definitely be a failure, just like bread without yeast. This is what Paul insists in his letter to the Hebrews saying, “And without faith it is impossible to please him. For whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him” (Hebrews 11:6, Bible RSV).
Jesus insisting faith in every prayer
Jesus insists faith in every encounter with God. His teachings insist that faith has the power to do anything. God the Father who can give everything will grant anything asked with real faith. Jesus assures this through his words, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and never doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ it will be done”(Matthew 21:21).
He has mentioned in many places that faith is the life breath of prayer. Jesus assures many a time that everything necessary for life is given to everyone. Whatever is necessary for life is readily available to humanity. But it can be obtained only through the key of faithful prayer. Jesus says, “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours” (Mark 11:24).
Jesus hails faith very highly
The woman suffering from constant bleeding touched his dress with great faith. At once she was cured. Jesus exalted this faith so high that he showed it as an example of faith. The three synoptic gospels speak high of this miracle. “And behold, a woman who had suffered from a hemorrhage for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment; for she said to herself, ‘If I only touch his garment, I shall be made well.’ Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, ‘Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.’ And instantly the woman was made well.” (Matthew 9:20-22)
People came from far off places to be healed from diseases. Jesus prepared the people in deepening their faith. He pointed out every time that it is their faith that cures them.
Prayer is not mere verbal saying of thoughtless words
Prayer should be rooted in strong faith. Then only it can yield good results. Mere verbal recitations or thoughts without faith cannot be called prayer. The mouth should pray an overflow of faith from the heart.
Prayer, faith and life of love are interlinked
Faith can become strong only when it is lived. Faith without action is said to be dead. Hence faith can be alive only when it is lived in day-to-day life. Prayer, faith and life of love have close relationship. It is living a selfless life of love that prayer gets the power of faith.
Faith, therefore, involves “deeds”, not as an attempt to acquire merits, but as a manifestation of true love. Prayer leavened by the yeast faith is life leavened by true love.
