Poetry
Maturing and Mature
Yonder Smith beholds the Gold and Iron;
The one meek, the other bold as a Lion,
One preciously pretty, the other stronger,
But one regards the other as brother.
Iron strong enough to beat Gold to shape,
Smith's discipline is sure without escape,
So come furnace fire to buffet the duo,
Time and time the trial will surely be due.
Every mortal, nay metal might this trial loathe;
Yet the two like all mortal must wear the cloth.
The Gold must be purely purged of the dirty dross,
As Iron sharpening Iron is it's very cross.
Out comes the Gold shinning brighter,
As the iron becomes stronger and sharper;
Then The Smith tries both in more fire;
Time and time again, to become fairer.
Until The Smith, though lovingly clement,
At rest, left both awhile to the elements;
Worsted and corrupted was the Iron,
But Gold remained shinning till Eon.
Now browned and reddened until brittle,
The stronger became weaker and little;
And Gold became stronger incorruptible,
The delight of The Smith immeasurable!
