“One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple.
For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; in the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me.
He shall set me high upon a rock. And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me; therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy in His tabernacle. I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.” (NKJV)
King David was a worshipper, and was called a ‘man after God’s heart’. He enjoyed great blessing and experienced victory in battle. He conquered nations and people, and knew the hand of the Lord upon His life in a powerful way. He walked in the favor of God, and could have asked the Lord for anything, but he sought the “One Thing”. More than anything else, he hungered for the presence of the Lord. There are many things we can learn from David’s life, but today, we want to look at His desire for the ‘One Thing’.
Friend, the Lord has so much in store for His kids this year. There may be many things you need to bring before Him as you seek His guidance for the months ahead, but Matthew 6:33 tells us that when we seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, everything else we could need in our lives will be added to us. As we make the Lord Jesus our priority, everything else begins to fall into place. David knew the wonder of spending time in the presence of God. He knew the awesome joy of being hidden in the secret place, and of being drawn close to the heart of the Father. He had seen the radiant beauty of the King, and he knew that there was nothing on the face of the earth that could compare with the beauty of the living Lord.
David had a nation and an army to lead. He had many things that demanded his time, and many problems that arose from within and without his kingdom. However, he knew that his life would be an empty shell if he was not filled up with the presence of God. He also knew that when he sought the Lord first and walked in His presence, God took care of all his problems. This is why he said: “He shall set me high upon a rock. And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me; therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy in His tabernacle. I will sing, yes, I will sing praises to the Lord.” He had many enemies, but God took care of them all. This year, the Father wants to fill your life with His joy! He wants to show you great and mighty things you never knew (Jeremiah 33:3). He wants to show you that when you seek Him first and His Kingdom, everything else will be added unto you, and you will walk in the blessing that David did, knowing great victory in every aspect of your life.
Precious child of the King, know that the Beautiful One is calling you today to step up into another dimension of worship in 2012. He is calling you to experience His beauty and look upon the glory of His face. He is calling you to enter into the Holy of Holies and be lost in the secret place. When the going gets tough, He will hide you in His presence; He will place you high upon a rock. You will be safe from all the weapons that are sent against you, held close to His heart. But seek the “One Thing” this year. Let the pursuit of the presence of Jesus be your heart’s cry and the passion of your life. Let it be the priority of your day to worship the King and spend time with Him. He loves you and longs for you to come and sit close to His side. You are His treasured possession, and His longed-for Bride!
May you seek after the “One Thing” this year. May you be like David and be radically blessed as you put Jesus first and practice His glorious presence!
