MYSTERIOUS CHRISTMAS CANDLE
By Connie Vigil

Early Christmas morning Emily awoke while it was still dark outside. “I cannot stand it any longer, I just cannot sleep. I am going to go wake up Thomas and see if he wants to sneak downstairs with me.”
Off went Emily into Thomas’s room where he was snoring so loud his curtains were flowing back and forth. “Thomas, wake up, Santa came, let’s go see what he brought us!” Emily exclaimed.
Thomas rubbing his eyes barely coming to his senses said, “Okay Em, let’s go see.”
“Let’s try not to wake mom and dad. It’s too early and they might get mad,” said Emily.
So off they went down the stairs. Each stair creaked as they took each step. Emily put her finger to her lips, “Shush.” They finally made it to the end of the stairway. The house was illuminated in Christmas tree lights and colored lights around the windows. Suddenly, the lights went out. Emily and Thomas were in darkness. They didn’t even get a look at the Christmas tree where Santa had left all the presents. What would they do now? Emily reached for the wall for the light switch to the living room and flipped it on, but no light. Now what? Emily was getting scared. She has always hated the dark. Thomas was not much help either. As they made it to the kitchen by feeling their way along the walls, they came to the kitchen window. Looking out they thought they could see snow falling and snow on the window.
“It’s a storm” they both said in unison.
Thomas said, “We need to find a flashlight or something so we can see.” He fumbled around in the kitchen and slipped and fell to his knees. Screeching as he hit the tile floor.
Emily said, “Hush!”
Emily decided she would attempt to look for a flashlight. She began feeling for drawers and pulling them out to see if she could find any kind of flashlight that could give them some light. But she had to feel her way around in the dark and couldn’t find anything. She thought to herself, I’ll keep searching, a flashlight is here somewhere. She thought of a lantern on the top of the refrigerator. How could she get up there? How in the world would they light it? Maybe Thomas could reach it from the counter top.
Emily said, “Thomas, get up on the counter and see if you can reach that lantern on top of the frig.”
Thomas said, “No way, my knees already hurt and I am not sure I can crawl up there in the dark. Besides, how would we light it?”
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Emily and Thomas froze. Who could be knocking at their door on Christmas morning in the dark and during a blizzard? Had mom and dad heard the knock? Should they open the door? No it was too dangerous. Emily and Thomas grabbed hold of each other as there was another soft knock. They began to make their way towards the window and to try and see if they could look out somehow and see who it was. It was just too dark. Then they suddenly heard what sounded like boots walking off away from the door.
“Do you think they are gone?” whispered Emily.
Thomas said, “I don’t know, but I think so.”
Then Emily said to Thomas, “Look Thomas, there is some light out there!” “Let’s open the door and see what it is.”
Thomas said, “No I am scared, what if it is something or someone mean?”
Emily said, “It sounds like they are gone now. Let’s see if we can see anything from the window.”
She opened the window curtain wider and there it was, a big lit candle with its flame blowing in the harsh winter wind. Both their noses were smashed up to the window to see who brought it. But all they saw was blowing snow.
Thomas said, “Perfect! Now we can see what Santa brought.”
But after looking down and seeing boot prints and hooved foot prints in the snow, Emily said, “I think we just did.”
