A family in a Missouri suburban town has gone all out with those inflatable lawn decorations for Christmas. There are nine of these large, colorful monuments to the season crowded together in the front yard. There’s a Santa, an elf, a Christmas Tree, a reindeer and some others. This year a huge inflatable Nativity Scene was added. During the evening, it is quite colorful and festive. For 3-4 hours each day a celebration of the season is on display.
But for the rest of each day the fans that pump these inflatables up are turned off. The deflated decorations lie in heaps in the yard, leaving it looking a shambles. Why turn them off? It could be to go “green”, saving electricity. It could be that the family thinks no one will notice except in the evening. I don’t know.
But what struck me is that this is how many of us go about celebrating the Advent Season. We get ourselves all pumped up for a time, then the air rushes out as we turn our attention to other things.
So, how do you approach getting and staying pumped up for Christmas?
