Well, my friends, my granddaughter Rachel (age 6) has done it again. It seems that a group of her friends were discussing the Creation at school. One of them began telling the Creation story with “Once upon a time…”
“That’s not right” Rachel interrupted. “It’s ‘In the beginning!’ That’s when God started everything. “Once upon a time” is how fairy tales start and God isn’t a fairy tale!”
Now, Rachel and her sister love fairy tales, as most kids do. They act them out, they make up their own. They love going to Disney World and meeting with the princesses. They must have a dozen princess outfits that they wear for “plays” with their parents. But it’s clear, Rachel understands the difference. She’s adamant about that.
I wish more of us adults could have that clear understanding.
Shalom, Art
