I was in front of the open window in my darkened office enjoying the thunderstorm-- a flash of lightning, a clap of thunder, the tree outside my window swaying, bent by the wind. Shortly thereafter, a gust of air massaged it’s cool fingers across my scalp, messing my hair. Goosebumps erupted all over my body. I'd always been captivated by these displays of natures power.
Over and over again, the same events happened in the same succession. I recalled previous thunderstorms I have enjoyed. Always, without exception, during a thunderstorm there is a wonderful refreshing breeze that accompanies it. It is the breeze that I enjoy so much. But this time, the breeze's cool reaching fingers touched my spirit as well as my body.
It occurred to me that my life was like that thunderstorm. I am pelted by troubles and trials, tossed this way and thrown that way. I fail, fall and falter. I am struck with pain and loss. I'm deafened by the sounds of grieving, turmoil and uncertainty. But always, without fail, during those storms I can receive a refreshing touch from God. It is those times of our lives that I need Him the most and to cling to Him the tightest. I grow closer to Him and somehow the storm doesn't seem so overpowering.
During the storms in your life, keep in mind that you can receive that fresh touch from God. Instead of fearing what havoc the storm will reap upon you, you can eagerly anticipate what unique touch you will receive from God. You can inhale deeply and enjoy the cool breeze of strength and peace. All you have to do is open the window.
"Lord, I need your refreshing presence in my life today and everyday. May the window of my heart always be open to your breezes. Amen."
