A Christmas Poem
Advent is such a special time,
preparing a place for God’s son,
we celebrate His gift to us,
in our hearts, He is reborn.
Christmas is quickly approaching,
it’s time to slow down and pray
as we listen with an open heart
and let Christ lead the way.
Our lives are always busy,
we work and move fast each day,
voice mail, computers, cell phones,
multi-tasking help us keep up the pace.
As the holidays are approaching
retail stores extend their hours,
ads say open 7 a.m. to midnight
to accommodate all the shoppers.
After our work and errands
we still have time to do more.
The workers look exhausted and tired,
as we do when leaving the store.
It’s time to prepare for Christmas,
it’s important to stop and pray,
time is getting late, I’m tired,
tomorrow will be a better day.
Christmas day has arrived,
the day I waited for,
and I discovered that I missed him
when He came to me before.
He was present in the faces
of those I saw each day,
the woman who held the door for me,
the sales person who said Happy Holidays.
He was present in the worker
at the check-out in the pharmacy,
who was tired from a busy day
and needed a kind word from me.
He was present in the man at work
who held the elevator door,
and smiled as I pressed the button
to get off on my floor.
He was present in the eyes of the man
who seemed lonely, lost and sad,
as he looked around the fast food place
for someone to share a moment, just a tad.
He was present in the eyes of those
taking a collection outside the store,
thanking everyone who put change in,
regardless how large or small.
I thought of the Good Samaritan who
was going to the Temple to pray,
and stopped to help the man on the road -
Did he make it to the Temple? Jesus never did say.
At church the choir is singing,
“The Savior born today we greet,
open your hearts to receive His love
and spread it to all you meet”.
Next year I’ll remember that
as we prepare to celebrate
the coming of Christ at Christmas,
we meet Him in all as we wait.
