Man's Love of Law vs. God's Law of Love

In the debate over the existence of God, both Christians and atheists attempt to use history to bolster their positions. The Christian seeks to convince others that our nation was founded on Christian principles that should be honored currently. The atheist seeks to prove that America was not founded on Christian values and the Christian should keep his beliefs to himself.

The unbeliever often attempts to use history out-of-context to assist him in his cause. “Separation of church and state” is one example of this tendency. This slogan, which appears in no body of law whatsoever, is often used by skeptics and atheists against believers. These advocates of autonomy try to trick the Christian into believing it is illegal to express faith in God or to publicly oppose godlessness. The Christian must not allow this overused and misunderstood phrase to force him to be silent about Jesus and the Gospel. The Christian must not stand silent as the moral climate of this nation sinks ever further into sin.

The overarching “law of tolerance”, which for the most part means acceptance of everything while evaluating nothing, is another example where public opinion seeks to overrule the Word of God. The idea of “tolerance” is being used to shut the mouth of anyone who speaks out against the moral decline of society. As in the 60’s, an atmosphere of “live and let live” and “if it feels good, do it” is taking over the thought processes of many human beings. To be discerning or to make judgments concerning ethical or moral issues is decried as being “hateful” or “intolerant” of others.

However, judgments are made every minute of every day by all of us. If we never weighed the options before making a decision, what kind of world would we have? It would be chaotic and destructive at the very least, if we would even still exist.

Since Christians take the Bible to be the written Word of God, then it is our source of Truth regardless of what went on in the history of our nation. Believers must stand on the Word of God regardless of whether popular opinion is with us or against us. The apostle Paul expresses his attitude concerning sharing the Gospel; an attitude that should be that of every Christian:
…just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please man, but to please God who tests our hearts. (1 Thessalonians 2:3-4 ESV)

Too many times, Christians forget that our faith is based on the truth of the Bible, not on public opinion. We are swayed by well-spoken or emotional arguments against God. Usually these arguments have elements of selfishly wanting to do our own will instead of loving, worshipping, and obeying God.
I say this in order that no one may delude you with plausible arguments...We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ. (Colossians 2:4, 2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV)

The Bible says that the universe belongs to God. No law, civil uprising, landslide vote, or celebrity endorsement will negate this fact. Sure, we could make a law that says, “The universe does not belong to God”, but that would not change the truth. Each one of us must decide whether to follow God or follow the speculations of man. No law, opinion, or argument of man should be allowed to overshadow the law, and love, of God.

...choose this day whom you will serve...as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." (Joshua 24:15 ESV)
