First of all, if it is nothing more than a feeling, it is probably not a call. You must test it. Ask some questions and allow some time for it to be confirmed by God. People use this word so casually.
Never jump at something quickly just because you feel called. Don't take action based on emotion alone, or just because there is no one else to do it, as is often the case in many local churches. A true calling will persist over time. You must look for divine confirmation and evidence for it. Identifying and responding to a call is serious business that God does not take lightly, with blessings if it is, indeed, a call, and possible negative consequences if it is not. God has designed each of his believers with a unique set of experiences, abilities, and spiritual gifts, and if one is not careful, he or she could wind up doing something that God never designed him or her to do. A calling is designed to give each believer an opportunity to maximize his or her potential for the benefit of the body of Christ and to fulfill the Great Commission of bringing people into His Kingdom.
If you continue to have a passion, a burning desire, and a sense of urgency or compulsion, accompanied by a restlessness of NOT doing something, it is more than likely, a true calling.
With all of this said, what questions should be asked, or steps taken, to move toward your calling?
One, is it in line with Scripture? You must have a good, comprehensive knowledge of His Word.
Two, is it compatible with your abilities or spiritual gifts? If you do not know what your gifts and strengths are, they must be identified.
Three, take steps forward, focusing on a particular type of ministry or people.
Four, begin investigating options or knocking on doors. Are opportunities opening up?
Five, are you getting, or have you received, the necessary training?
Six, is God confirming your call over time? Others will recognize that you are gifted in a specific type of ministry.
If you are convinced you are called to a particular ministry, you will take action. You will not be content to just sit around and do nothing about it. If you are not called, after some time the desire will leave you, and you will see no reason to take any further steps.
All Christian young people need to give serious attention to this matter because it will impact the rest of your life.
