“Why are you furious? And why are you downcast?” (Genesis 4:6 HCSB)
Is this not a good question to ask? We live in a time when people are furious and downcast. The world seems to always be on the verge of war, or conflict, or some form of uprising somewhere in the four corners. Americans have come to the point in their lives where they are questioning the sanity of elected officials, sent to Washington, by popular vote (and that word “popular” is more correct than ever before). We ask them to attempt to make sense out of a system which has been manipulated and scorned to the point that others laugh at us. We, the American people, have elected these individuals to go and make a difference, to make wise decisions and to do what is right according to the thoughts and the opinions of the grassroots people.
Yet, we continue to find more and more problems with the decisions they make. But, we also have things on the homefront which cause us to be “furious” and “downcast.” We see drug problems increasing, a rise in domestic abuse, couples going through divorce, and the family unit being shaken to the point we do not even recognize it anymore. What one generation tolerated; the next generation accepts and parades before the eyes of the world.
Even within the walls of the church we are finding individuals who accept things which at one time was condemned; things which were openly proclaimed as sin from the pulpits of our churches. The generation today will say, “It is permissible; we can compromise on this issue and everything will work out to the best for everyone.” Yet, compromising beliefs and allowing worldly ideologies into the church cause dysfunctional churches, divided loyalties and future problems.
If you are as I am, thinking these are times of great distress we are living in today, you are not alone. Around every corner I am finding individuals who agree with me regarding the times we are living in-it is truly the last days. Many mourn and weep as they see that truth, but wait, even with that being the truth, there is hope; a light at the end of the tunnel.
Friend, I have read the last chapter of the book, and those of us who belong to God win! That is right, we win. We who are called by the name of Christ-we have staked our hope of eternity in Him and His Son Jesus has cleansed us from all sin-we have this sure foundation to stand on: We win! So we need to look up, for “our redemption draweth nigh.” (Luke 21:28 KJV)
We need to look up! Look up to see the hope, so that our “hearts be not troubled.” (John 14:1 KJV) Look up for the cross is being lifted up in these last days, and those who look shall live: “The Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in Him will have eternal life.” (John 3:14-15 HCSB) Look up so that you will not fear these things which surround us: “Be strong and very courageous to carefully observe the whole instruction…Do not turn to the right or the left, so that you will have success wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:7 HCB)
Look up friend! Set your eyes on Jesus, the Alpha and Omega. He is the only one who can carry us through the mess of this world and lead us safely home to our permanent address.
