1 And God spoke all these words, saying, 2 “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 3 “You shall have no other gods before me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Ex 20:1-6 (ESV)
In one of the classes I am taking it asks three questions when it talks about worship. They are who do we worship? Why do we worship? How should we worship? The question who do we worship made me wonder if we really understand who we are actually called to worship. When you turn on the TV we have lots of stars, athletes, politicians or anyone of a thousand others we can idolize. The TV shows like American Idol and Americas Got Talent are out there creating more people for you to admire. We have seen people worship football teams on Saturday and Sunday over the God that gives them breath. Do we understand what worship is? By definition it is giving reverence to a divine being or supernatural power. It is also defined as extravagant respect or admiration for or a devotion to an object of esteem. I guess the question becomes which one defines your understanding of worship. You see God commands He be the only God in our lives. We can admire other things but when the rubber meets the road He requires we hold him to be the only God and the only one worthy of our worship. To many times we create a God of our own liking one who is not the God of the Bible because we see this God as harsh or unfair. When we do that we are not worshipping the one true God.
When you have accepted Jesus as Lord and savior in your life you accept His Father. Have you ever wondered why you see generations of people making the same mistakes and poor choices? Somewhere in there families past God was not worshipped for who He is and He has kept His promise. You can change that today if your family is under a curse by accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. Than instead of God seeing the failings of your ancestors and yourself He will only see the blood washed person you have become. We must worship the God of the Bible through His Son and the Holy Spirit to truly understand who He is and what it means to worship Him. Today is the day of Salvation! I pray you have a right relationship with Jesus and have placed your worship in the right perspective and God back in the position only He can hold. Have a blessed day and try to join in fellowship with others tonight for mid week service.
