Ezekiel 15:1-3 The word of the Lord came to me: Son of man, how is the wood of a vine better than that of a branch on any of the trees of the forest? Is wood ever taken from it to make anything useful? Do they make pegs from it to hang things on?
This verse made me wonder why on earth Jesus says in
John 15:1-6 I am the true vine, and My Father is the gardener. He takes away every branch in Me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit He prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If anyone remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.
To me l felt that Jesus could have likened himself to something more gigantic like the Oak tree or the apple tree. Then it dawned on me that if those trees did fail to bear fruit they could have another use for instant fireword or being carved into furniture. Though they are meant to bear fruit they can be used for something else.
This is very different from the vine. If it has no life and if it does not bear fruit then it is completely useless. It cant be used to make furniture not even a peg. Because of its thin nature it cant be used for firewood. How long would that flame last.
Without life and fruit the grapevine is completely useless.
Us being branches of the vine get our source of life and the strength to bear fruit from the vine. If we dont get life from Jesus, who is the vine, then we are completely dead. We are useful for nothing else.
I guess Jesus didnt want any confusion on that issue. Without life from him we are just good to be thrown away.
Lord l pray that l will remain in you and that l will get my life from you.I pray that l will bear fruit in abundance because of your life which is within me.
Thank you lord and amen.
