Are you really thankful?

Is it me, or is time flying like a rocket with eternal fuel to burn in space? It seems like it was January 2011 just yesterday, and today we are counting fewer than two months to a new year. I canít help but wonder if I have been as productive as I proudly resolved to be at the beginning of the new year. I guess a few more weeks will point to where I stand, and I promise to thank the Lord no matter how unflattering the truth may be.

The third Thursday in the month of November is always dedicated in the United States of America to giving thanks to God. Many celebrate it with their immediate and extended families, some with friends, some by themselves, and a few are indifferent. How do you celebrate it? Is it a lifestyle or just an annual gorging on turkey and pumpkin pie?

That we are alive is reason enough to give God thanks for His faithfulness. How many people started this year hopeful for the best but are six feet under today? How many had to dramatically alter their lifestyle because they lost their jobs and stayed unemployed? How many one-time prosperous people are now dealing with financial, spiritual, marital, or physical poverty? What about those whoíve come under unimaginable persecutionóeven leading to death--because of the gospel that many of us take for granted? Not to mention human beings just like you and I who cannot boast of a single simple meal a day. I can go on, but Iím sure these are enough reasons to provoke you to begin thanking God.

When I think of where the Lord has brought me - even MannaEXPRESS - I canít help but shout, ďThank you, Jesus!Ē If it had not been the Lord on our side, when trials, tribulations, affliction, and oppression almost overpowered us, where would we be?

When my older son was two months old, we went to visit a classmate from overseas that I hadnít seen in years. I arrived in the subdivision where she lived, got on her street, and realized I couldnít distinguish her house from two that looked similar. Since my cell phone had a dead battery, there was no way for me to call and verify the exact house. I pulled into the driveway of the first house and was going to quickly ring the doorbell, then if it was hers go back to the car and take my son out of his baby carrier. The Holy Spirit cautioned me not to leave my child in the car even for that brief moment. So I pulled him out.

I rang the bell, and my friend opened the door. I canít begin to express the joy and the relief I felt when I saw her. We walked into the house chatting excitedly.

Just five minutes later, we heard a frantic knock at the door. It was her next-door neighbor with bad news: My car had rolled down the hill and crashed into a huge tree. I rushed out to look, and to my amazement, the rear of the car was thoroughly mangled. I thanked God for sparing my son. What if Iíd left my baby in the car and rung the bell? I hate to think of what could have happened and still have goosebumps any time I remember it.

I will always thank God for what He did on that day, what He is doing today, and what He will do tomorrow. Blessed be His Holy Name forevermore.

Until next time, stay thankful!
