You do not know me and there is no conceivable reason why you should. I call myself your friend, for so I am, if you will permit me the liberty to inflate the word to include all wannabe friends, as well as those of proven friendship, and those from afar with long-held and sincere desires of amity and benevolence towards the Chinese. The personal contact is of lesser importance as compared to the fount of unblemished support for a people and a country that has struggled magnificently to develop its unique identity without malice and belligerence while at the same time reaching out with generosity to assist others. Even President Barrack Obama, in a lucid moment of frankness, regards your development as non-hostile. Enough said.
If you are a praying man, and I have absolutely no reason for a judgment either way, you would view the hapless, topsy-turvy, dreadful, existential situation as an answer to your prayers. The European Union is the biggest economy in the world and the biggest segment of that, the Euro-zone, is in deep crisis because of financial recklessness and economic mismanagement. Let’s face it; they are drowning in debt. The notion that you can live beyond your means decades upon decades without consequence is the substance of voodoo economics.
The European Union has a GDP (Purchasing Power Parity) of around US$ 16 trillion, USA of about US$ 15 trillion and China of about US$ 10 trillion and yet the Euro-zone is looking to China for assistance. This is very strange and exceptionally revealing with undertones of a seismic shifting in world affairs. The USA that hitherto has been seen as the answer to all things is now regarded as a helpless spectator; unwilling and particularly unable to help their Alliance partners across the Atlantic. The frantic scramble to right that thing floating on the water is a lesson in meaningless action and voluminous, hubristic futility apparent to all thinking adults. That thing floating on the water is a corpse not some injured animal needing assistance, it’s a failed model that has died years ago but kept preserved by clueless politicians and junk economics. You were right not to come to the Euro-zone assistance in the form they require because that would merely prolong the illusion and kick the can of worms a little further into the future. This European/USA model of neo-Liberal mythology manufactured by “the masters of the universe” and supported by a plethora of fawning acolytes has, again, brought the world to the brink of bankruptcy.
All of this would be horrendous enough if it was confined to finance and economics but there is contagion, whose tentacles go deep into the fabric and soul of innocent humanity. Across the globe governments are reporting higher than average suicide rates, families are putting off getting children fearing for their future, violence is sky-rocketing everywhere because of frustration, anger and unemployment, leaders are loosing the trust of their countrymen, homophobia is on the rise and the social fabric of society is facing enormous stress. As things presently stand there is no quick escape for “the masters of the universe” from their self-created disaster, the knee-jerk response of Old Europe to invade and pillage impoverished countries is no longer possible, and as a consequence there is bound to be increasing internal turmoil and violent conflict. These are but some of the very pressing reasons why China needs to act and to act prudently and without delay in bringing forward a new paradigm for this generation and the future wellbeing of the world.
Mountainous difficulty, barbaric wars, international tumult, shifting loyalties, enormous volatility, gigantic uncertainties and immeasurable hopelessness do not create the most opportune time to encourage dynamic leadership but one has to deal with what is present. Some great leaders has emerged form just such inauspicious circumstances. Take two that readily comes to mind. Sir Winston Churchill was regarded as just an average politician but World War 2 turned him into a British icon as he showed remarkable, astute leadership as he took the helm during that bloody war. Also during that war another notable leader, even more esteemed than Sir Winston Churchill, emerged to take the helm for the United States of America. Franklin Delano Roosevelt showed the world how to lead in times of acute distress and did so with an aplomb and effectiveness that has earned him the sobriquet as “one of the greatest USA presidents”.
Hu Jintao, my friend, the world is looking to you and the leadership in China to calm its jangling nerves, to dissipate its morbid fear and give it something refreshing and joyous that will take them into a settled and prosperous future. Be it far from me or anyone else to tell you what to do for that would be a monstrous presumption on our part and in any case we are unqualified to do so. There is a saying that procrastination is the thief of time and I am sure you know this for you have acted with promptness on a number of important occasions and I have every confidence that you will do so now.
You have done some good things during your presidential tenure, like releasing the list containing eight honours and eight shames, a powerful set of moral concepts, and strengthening the ties with a buoyant, continental Africa. I do not believe you have reached the limit of your attainment for it is within your grasp to equal, and maybe surpass the great helmsman of China – Mao – and leave a mighty legacy for your successors to follow. We are waiting.
