An Evening to Remember

Sitting atop a grassy knoll and gazing into an evening sky, you are absorbed by the vastness of creation. The wispy cirrus clouds, white as a ball of cotton stretched thin and gossamer-like by invisible winds, are the first to garner your attention. Contrasted against the azure-blue sky, your thoughts expand and your gaze widens as you attempt to soak in the entire panoramic view in one snapshot moment; preserved and remembered. The worries and concerns you brought with you are forgotten for a moment as you give yourself over to the dreamy, carefree feeling that the delicate and ethereal image generates.

Soon you begin to focus in on the detail of your view. You become aware of slight changes in the shapes of the clouds you had just attempted to preserve in your memory for all time. You ponder the winds moving through and watch as wispiness becomes space and space cloud. Ever changing before you, you wonder which moment was more beautiful; which one should you attempt to remember and preserve. Then an early evening star reveals itself to you and the clouds nearly disappear as you begin searching the skies for more evidence that night is approaching. Your thoughts soar beyond earthly issues into the expanse of space and you lose yourself for a few moments into its vastness. Small stars…human insignificance. You feel small and the concerns you had been carrying with you are lightened and forgotten.

You bring your focus back to earth and see for the first time the wild flower sitting quietly at your feet. Its crimson petals are reflecting the day’s last light and you realize that by morning it will be gone. You feel that this last show of brilliance was just for you and you alone to see. No one else would ever experience the glory represented by the life of this single flower. You whisper a prayer of thanks as you accept God’s precious gift of love; His bouquet of glory. Feelings of insignificance are overwhelmed by the magnitude of His grace.

Your gaze once again turns upward and you are surprised by the transformation that has taken place. White has become yellow…and now orange. The sun, gone from view, casts its radiant beams back towards the encroaching darkness as if to celebrate the day’s end. Changes in the sky are happening more rapidly now and evidence of unseen forces are revealed. Behind you, the moon has begun its entrance into the heavenly sky and with it you become aware of the earth’s rotation and its role in the grandeur unfolding before you. Unseen and never felt, yet always present and always orchestrating the day’s journey.

It’s time to go and yet you hesitate. You have felt insignificance and experienced God’s love. You have seen the invisible and grasped the concrete. You have experienced the wispiness of time within the backdrop of eternity. The magnitude of God revealed in the expanse of the heavens; Jesus’ love for you shared through a bright, yet dieing flower; and an understanding of how the Holy Spirit quietly works in your life illustrated by the earth’s steadfast movement through space. You are blessed. The moment fills your heart. And then you leave, taking the love of God with you back into your life to cherish and share.

Closing Prayer:

Glorious Lord, Gracious Father, and Guiding Spirit: Your love overwhelms us. Throughout the vastness of the universe, how is it that you have chosen to love us so intensely? Why, through all our faults and selfish actions, do you still remain faithful with your love? We are unworthy yet you never give up. You give, give, and give some more. Your Spirit lives within us, quietly guiding, and yet we forget. We take credit, seek fulfillment, plot, plan, scheme, and design our lives as though you have nothing to do with it. Then we stop for a moment and reflect. When we do we find that you have been with us at all times and you have been teaching us through all things. You never cease in your efforts to transform us into the heavenly creatures you have created us to be. Our destiny will be fulfilled despite our best efforts to undo your creation. You love. You forgive. And you forget. Lord, we pray that we become ever mindful of your love represented by your grace and the sacrifice your Son accepted in our behalf. Help us to become more aware of your guiding Spirit so we can become Christ-like in everything we do and say. This we pray through Jesus Christ, the savior of the world. Amen.
